The Ministry for Resources has issued guidelines on recreational fishing aimed at conserving fish stocks, particularly tuna and swordfish.

Tuna cannot be caught without a permit and swordfish cannot be fished between October 1 and November 30. Traps and lines specifically used to catch them have been prohibited.

The fish caught must be of a minimum length and personally consumed. If sold, a permit must be obtained and proceeds have to go to charity.

Any swordfish or tuna caught must be landed at Mġarr, Marfa, Valletta or Marsaxlokk, where they will be inspected. The fishermen must notify each port at least four hours before reaching harbour.
