A scheme whereby non-governmental organisations can acquire reconditioned computers at a low price was announced today by IT Minister Austin Gatt.
The ‘PC4NGOs’ scheme was announced at the Caritas San Blas centre, where 10 reconditioned Pentium IV computers were presented to the director, Mgr Victor Grech. They will be used by the residents following drug rehabilitation courses at the centre.
Dr Gatt said NGOs are being given the opportunity to acquire up to five (reconditioned PCs each. In this way, the ministry would help bridge the digital divide whilst the organisations would be able to take advantage of the technology accessible through the Internet.
He added that the Malta Communications Authority was working with a number of NGOs to improve digital literacy in the community.
All NGOs, set up for more than a year, can apply for the PC4NGOs scheme by logging on to www.mca.org.mt, downloading an application form, filling it in and mailing it, by registered post, to:
PC4NGOs, Malta Communications Authority, Valletta Waterfront, Pinto Wharf, Floriana, FRN1913. The PCs will cost between €50 and €80 each. Applications have to be made by June 19.
