Chiara sparkles on stage
Photo: Olivier Vanhoutte
Chiara gave a good performance during her first dress rehearsal earlier today, though she admitted it was not her best. She will have the chance to fine tune her act later tonight and again tomorrow morning before the actual semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest tomorrow night.
Everyone finally got a glimpse of the dress she plans to wear. Designed by Charles and Ron, it's a black dress that sparkles with thousands of Swarovski crystals. The outfit matches the new backdrop of a starry night perfectly.
The Maltese delegation has also decided to do away with the dry ice effect on stage.

For all of you who keep saying this is a waste of money, i think you didnt hear the news yesturday saying that this year it was all sponership, and the goverment didnt need to finance it, the hairdresser had there sponer even the make up artist, so they are not using the tax payers money as they have been grumbling, WELL DONE CHIARA , we needed you to get us back into the finals you made us proud, whatever happens on Saturday doesnt matter as you are the best to us, Well done to all the team you are very professional. Chiara looked stunning last night , Best of luck and God bless you .

I would like to say congratulations to Chiara. But I would like to point out that the sound of music was very low, it was almost inaudible. Was this done on purpose or was it just a technical fault?
I wish the best of luck to Chiara in the Finals.

What a waste of time and money - this is all so boring. But then mediocrity has always been a yardstick in the maltese mentality.

Yes....Chiara has a lovely voice and her image has really improved, but a tiny bit of humility and modesty would certainly not do her any harm........She has become too full of herself and certain remarks she makes just give me a sense of arrogance ......Anyway, GOOD LUCK Chiara!!!

I do have a surprise for you.
Last year, both my family and I were in Cairo (Egypt).
While setting in a small coffee-shop having a drink, I heard something coming a bit from far. Well I walked to the shops next to the coffee-shop in trial to trace what I was hearing. To my biggest surprise it was Chiara’s song ‘the one I love”. I chatted for few with the owner of the shop and I was very curious to know where he got that song from, he replied. An Italian man gave him the CD.
The only (minor) disappointment I had: the owner of the shop thought that Chiara was an Italian, not Maltese. Obviously I clarified the matter for him, but it was a big job to explain to the gentleman where Malta is…heheheh
That day I came to the conclusion that Music can be our best ambassador.

Tonio Fenech you are absolutely wrong about no media coverage in Germany. The Eurovision is quite a fun party event there. The German tabloids cover it and the national TV (either ARD or ZDF) organise open air parties and big screens are set up and the crowd parties all night. I myself organise a Eurovision party here in Salzburg and invite all my friends who come from different European countries and we watch and celebrate and comment and have fun. It brings everyone closer and many people ask me a lot of questions about Malta. Please don't generalize and most of all don't moan. I hate moaners!

How ironic to get the full blessing of the majority of Maltese people to waste money on things such as the Eurovision, and yet we find it easy to point our fingers at illegal immigrants because they are a burden on our economy...

What is wrong with some of you people? Maltese gemgem and how! Mary Jane et al, do you suppose we should stop all our sports men and women from competing as well. Do you think we should seize from taking part in any sort of competition, since most of the time, as we are a small nation the chances are we won't win. What is wrong with you? Or is it jealousy at it's worst?
As for the ones who are saying Chiara should give younger singers a chance (Stephen Farrugia), well we've had them in the Malta song for Europe contest and she beat them all. Obviously, they either did not have the song or their performance was not good enough. Now if our younger ones can't take the competition, it's they who should pack it up. Why should Chiara not take part cause she won it before? So Italy, Germany, Brazil and so on should stop taking part in World Cup finals in order to give others a chance. Why all this negativity? Go southern girl, Go. Good luck Chiara. I know you'll make us proud unlike some pessimists writing here.

@tim I'm afraid that you are gravley misinformed, about Chiara's popularity. I can assure you that her music is being played on Scandinavian radio stations and in homes as they are big fans, try and find a cd of her in the shops in Malta I tried every summer I came over but they were all the time sold out, while with all respect I never heard any of Ira's music ever, except when in Malta that is. She even has fans in other euoropean countries only she doesn't know it ,what do you expect with such a voice. Her music is even being played in airoplanes on long distance flights I heard it when I went to the Seyschell islands. You are right do not compare her to Ira as she has achieved much higher placings then Ira, mind you Ira is a good singer too. Must be a matter of opinion one which not many share with you but she did get better results then others, so be proud of her as she represents your country, of which I imagine you are proud of too!

I don't know why people here critisize always others for how they are and what they do. It's true that maybe it is the third time that Chiara is going to Eurovision but she is not the only singer who rapresented her country at this contest more than once. If I am not mistaken Ireland has been reprsented more than once by the same singer a few years ago. Fabrizio Faniello went twice to represent Malta at Eurovision like Chiara did and when he went the last time he did a horrible disaster but the two times in which she went she both did very well. Some people just say certain things because they are jelous!

To be honest NO PAPER or TV covers the Eurovision apart maybe from some tiny article by a veteran like Terry Wogan. The French, the Germans, the Italians, the English...just don't bother!
This festival is useless and has no importance in the music world. Even a TV show like X-Factor has more weight than this!
In Malta, on the contrary, we have the same old hysteria and the Ministry of Culture spending a big part of its budget on this silliness.Well, I guess a free luxury holiday once a year suits them!
Lets make away with this selfishness and use our money properly.

Good luck Chiara! However, for me the song is just BORING and just a recycled mixture of Chiara's previous 2 Eurovision entries. There are so many more local singers and groups with a high iunternational standard, and we keep hanging with the same stuff. Chiara should come down from her clouds and go back to her roots.
At least, Eurovision is a good excuse to organise a friend gathering.

I hope she does well for the sake of our nation, but I must be frank.....if the eurovision wouldn't exist.....Chiara would be nobody...she did nothing apart that or the usual slot on net tv or some sad wedding reception function with lawrence grey...hate to compare her to Ira but.....I think she has to grow up and move on....eurovision is a waste of time.....still I did bet 10 euros on Jade!.....betting seems the only fun out the eurovision nowadays

Chiara, we wish you luck.
One suggestion: Next competition you'll be involved with, please write a song and call it "Maltese gemgem". It will be a most appropriate title for so many of them whiners we have around.

I like that dress. Makes her stand out from the background!
i'm glad that for once she stopped partying and shopping and got down to some work. It's a disgrace that these people have an extended luxury holiday from the taxpayer's money!
Yes she needs to tune her act...intonation wasn't flawless!

Well said Joe Fabri, at least the media are having a field day, most media newspapers have nothing else to report so this sort of hype tend to sell papers, but i think they should focus more on the entry number or song as opposed to the contestant's nights' out or what they are wearing over and under it sort of spoils the big night's surprise for most, as now we know what Chiara will be wearing so its not a WOW!. but yeah we.ve already seen the dress, its like when people get married and the groom is not allowed to see the Bride's dress, same sort of feeling i guess

Dont be silly Mary Anne, we will not see many tourists this year or the next, however hard we try and spend, spend and spend on the eurovision, adverts on the London buses, Amsterdam OR timbaktu its recession and times are hard, people especially the Brits. are staying put, so win or loose its just an outdated show that now the Russians are taken over after most europeans ie., the italians etc., have ditched the whole eurovison voting fiddles by each other's neighbours, who is going to back us up, certainly not the Italians at least not now or maybe the libyans - better still Gozo or maybe??Comino. its a just a show after all at our expence, lets hope some of our under priviliged pensioners will be watching.

Go on Chiara make us proud, We love you!!!

As a tax payer i wonder who is paying for all these beautiful dresses and jewellery, hotel bills and everything that goes with it ? what happens if we don't make the semis let alone the finals, will all that thousands of euros spent be made up again by the tourists? Mary Jane Debone
