Melita leads home entertainment, internet provider

The Malta Communications Authority's market review for the period between July and December 2008 has re-confirmed Melita as the leading local provider of home entertainment and broadband internet services.

Melita Mobile was not yet in operation during the period under review.

The market review shows that Melita has retained its position as Malta's leading broadband internet provider.

As at December 2008, Melita's broadband cable internet products enjoyed a 52 per cent market share with over 52,000 families and businesses connected to its cable internet service.

The market review also confirmed that Melita's fixed-line telephony continues to grow steadily. At the end of last year, around 55,000 fixed lines were connected to Malta's cheapest fixed-line telephone network, representing a market share of more than 21 per cent for Melita, up eight per cent over 2007.

Melita is also the provider of choice for television services with 75 per cent of the market subscribed. Melita's digital television subscriptions continued to increase steadily and by the end of 2008, stood at over 48,000 subscriptions.

Works on the laying of Melita's €10 million submarine fibre optic cable have been completed.
