Labour candidate challenges government
Steve Borg, Labour Party candidate for the forthcoming European Parliament elections, has challenged Dr Gonzi's administration to consult with international environmental organisations that are long established as experts in this field, namely Greenpeace International, Friends of the Earth (FoE) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This, he said, would clearly demonstrate that the administration respects people's opinion against incineration.
Mr Borg said that he is making this claim in reaction to the Maltese government's intention to start incinerating waste at the Marsaxlokk power station.
If the government consults with independent organisations, the public will rest assured that government itself is paying attention to the scientific advice and experience that these organisations have, Mr Borg added. He said that he is making his appeal in the light of the government's commitment to transparency and public accountability.
Mr Borg stated that it is painful to watch a Nationalist MEP candidate who is declaring himself to be an environmentalist to simultaneously assert that waste incineration is acceptable in a country as small as Malta.
As a prospective MEP and as one who will place such environmental issues among his uppermost priorities, Mr Borg said that he is expecting Dr Gonzi's administration to give the public a guarantee that waste incineration in Marsaxlokk is neither going to increase the incidence of disease nor have a negative impact on the health of the residents in the south of Malta.

It is indeed disconcerting that Steve Borg, an individual whom I considered as a fellow environmentalist and even as a friend since we militated within the same NGO (Nature Trust) up to some time ago, is basing his entire European Parliament campaign on confrontation and mud-slinging in my regards.
I invite Mr. Borg to explain to his potential electorate what the process of waste incineration actually is, rather than instilling unfounded fears for purposes of political mileage. I expect him to be responsible enough to quote from recent scientific reports on the issue, and not from reports dating back to 1997. Incineration has moved a long way ever since 1997 but is seems Mr. Borg’s clock has stopped 12 years back. Why is Steve omitting any mention of the terms Refuse Derived Fuel and of the potential this could make towards attaining the 20/20/20 targets? Can he explain how the Maltese government (even a possibly future Labour one) will attain such targets if he is one of those who are continuously shooting down any government initiative to this sense?

To all PN hopefuls - just bear in mind that before the 2004 EP elections when we were promised heaven on earth by the then EFA administration, LP managed to get 3 seats against the 2 seats by the PN - a real blow below the belt if you ask me!!!!! So keep your hair on until the 6th June before posting your mudslinging statements. @ A.Micallef Let's see which Party has the more useless teams........dream on!!!!!

Is this guy living in 2009 or what? Doesn't he know what modern incineration methods are like? All he has to do is to go see the Marsa incinerator, maybe he'll learn something. Now that's a challenge! But coming from the PL camp of MEP hopefuls one needs not amaze onself.

Labour loves challeging. I've heard this confrontational word used by Labour so many times during the past years, that it has become synonymous with the LP in my mind. Were we living in medeaval times, the LP would find it difficult to find enough gauntlets to go round. When will Labour learn that confrontation is counter producive and that moderates prefer civilised arguments.

Nice way to get out of anonimity. Would have done better to remain in the anonimity if he does not have anything better to say. This shows what a useless team of candidates the Labour Party is proposing.
