The government’s announcement of a reduction in energy tariffs should help ease off some of the burden Maltese families were carrying, the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions said.
It said this announcement should oboost consumer confidence and help stimulate the economy that was also being affected by the international recession.
"One thing is becoming evident – while energy will become one of the defining issues of this century, the era of ‘easy’ oil is over and this will continue to be a fixed item on each country’s agenda, Malta being one of them," it said.
CMTU, together with the UHM, would always support a tariff structure that rewarded responsible consumption and one which promoted lower carbon dioxide emissions.
