The Vice President of the European Commission Antonio Tajani has said clearer rules should be established to solve the dispute between Malta and Italy over who should take in immigrants saved in our large Search and Rescue Area.
In an interview with The Times ahead of a brief visit today, Commissioner Tajani does not take any sides over the issue but admits the EU should do more to help the two countries carry the burden.
"Both Italy and Malta are in fact right in this respect. And Europe has to discuss possible solutions. More European solidarity is needed."
Today, Commissioner Tajani will meet Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi at Castille and will address a conference on Malta's first five years as an EU member.
