An Israeli soldier was shot dead in the occupied West Bank on Thursday during a confrontation with Palestinians, a military spokesman said.

Israeli media said the military was investigating the possibility that the soldier was killed by "friendly fire" from a fellow soldier.

The military spokesman said the shooting took place in a village north of the West Bank city of Ramallah.
