With the 2009 Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) only weeks away, Maltese shooters have been taking part in a series of competitions with the aim of hitting peak form in their respective disciplines.

In the air-pistol category, Ray Cacciattolo, a prospective GSSE participant for Team Malta, obtained his second successive best score of the season with an excellent 558 points last weekend. Cacciattolo topped the classification ahead of Martin Grech who gained 485 points.

The air-rifle event attracted a low turn-out as many of the shooters were doing their Matsec examinations. Nevertheless, Lawrence Darmanin scored 557 and 100.7 points in the final.

Last weekend, William Vella was in Cyprus where he participated in an important competition together with air-rifle shooters from the 2009 GSSE host country.

Vella claimed top spot with a creditable score of 571. The day before, in another competition, Vella recorded a high score of 584 to finish well ahead of the Cypriot competitors.
