Socialists see urgent need for burden sharing
The Socialist Group in the European Parliament has promised it will do its utmost to ensure the EU treats Malta's illegal immigration problem as a special case.
The Socialists' leader Martin Schultz wrote to Maltese MEP Louis Grech saying Malta could no longer wait for an agreement on burden-sharing to be reached with all member states.
"The problem of illegal immigration in Malta should be treated as a special case and immediate action by the EU should be considered. Burden-sharing should start with immediate effect," he wrote. "It is evident that Malta cannot carry this added burden on its own. The current solidarity spirit among member states is not giving the desired results and the EU is showing it does not know how to manage this problem in concrete terms," he added.
Mr Schultz promised Mr Grech that the Socialist group would be exerting its pressure on the EU to give Malta the necessary concrete help to face this problem.
Mr Schultz was replying to a letter Mr Grech sent calling on the Socialist Group to help Malta solve the immigration problem.
Giving details on the prevalent situation, Mr Grech told Mr Schultz that "urgent action is needed as the European institutions are not addressing the island's problems with the necessary urgency".

Dear Mr. Martin Schultz, I honestly belief that the majority of the Maltese are not really thankful for your statement. Please reflect: If the Socialist group would really help Malta, it needs to stop illegal immigration once and for all. Forget about Burden Sharing please! You see, you do not seem to realize that this issue concerns the whole of Europe...not just Malta, Italy, Spain...Europe will become destabilised if illegal immigration is not effectively stopped at all costs! Please do not let the Socialist group do what certain local , European and World N.G.O.s try to do - open the flood gates of illegal immigration so that the few immigrants with a claim to political asylum can be helped. All the political groups in the E.U. - yours included, need to understand that, with massive c. 9 million unemployment looming in Europe's face, it does not make economic sense to allow the tens of thousands - if not millions- who seek to enter Europe illegally for economic reasons. Dear Mr. Schultz I do hope you understand and share this message with all socialists.

My humble, personal view of burden sharing is 'a sure passport to Europe'.
The more countries accepting burden sharing, the more inviting will be the temptation to cross the Med. Would-be illegal immigrants will have a guarantee, that if they make it at least to Malta or Lampedusa, they may be taken the rest of the way to Belgium, Holland, Germany....
That will mean that not thousands will try to cross every year, but tens of thousands. And what will Malta do then?????
The only way forward is for Malta, Italy and Libya to reach an agreement to send them back. Then gradually, even Libya will have less immigrants thronging her shores. If they see that it is useless to try, gradually they will loose interest.

@ Charles Sammut,
You are correct; it is the hidden agenda of the Communists, Greens and Socialists to import millions of African immigrants, legally or illegally, in order to eventually give them the vote and thus guaranteeing substantial votes for these parties in order to remain in power.
This is the same tactic that it is going to be used by Barack Obama in relation to the illegal Latin American immigrants in the USA, thus also guaranteeing substantial votes for the Democratic Party!
These are the HIDDEN AGENDAS of the LEFTIES!

Who said that burden sharing is the means to the end. Long term strategy for Africa is not developed overnite and the results, unfortunately, are in the distant future.
Unfortunately, burden sharing and stopping illegal immigration at source are part of the short term solutions.
In regards to a long term strategy for Africa, my question to you and to the one that is against everything that is EU, GaleaL, how such a strategy could be implemented in Somalia?

This is nothing but a long term plan by the Socialists swamp the Eu with immigrants and then give them the vote. Same tactic employed by the Labour Party in the UK.
Repatriation not burden sharing. Maroni got it right.

.
Malta and the EU do NOT need BURDEN SHARING, as this will automatically be a MAGNET for all the illegal immigrants to come to Malta or Lampedusa with the knowledge that they will be AUTOMATICALLY ACCEPTED in any EU country.
If the EU needs imported workers, then the EU should open its embassies in the African continent and start providing these immigrants with the working permits and visas.
These immigrants must ensure that they have i) a CLEAN CONDUCT SHEET and ii) a CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH.
This will be the best way to control and administer the importation of labour into Europe and also this will eliminate the criminal activities of the human traffickers.
I am sure if this policy is adopted, then both Malta and Italy will be happy again!

I have to agree with lgalea. Burden sharing is not the answer to our problems. Prompt and efficient repatriation, coupled with a long term strategy for Africa is. We cannot move the population of Africa into Europe no matter how ethical or moral some people may make it out to be.
Even if mistakes have been made in Africa by the colonisers - cultural, religious as well as racial suicide is not valid atonement for such mistakes.

Where the European Socialist with the Maltese PL MEPs have been in the last 5 years on Illegal Immigration and the general issue of immigration in general.?
Well let see, the European Socialist and their Maltese PL MEPs have been totally silent to date on Illegal Immigration; and have voted in favour for EU Member States to be able to host suspected Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists being held at Guatanamo Prison in Cuba, and to extend voting rights to immigrants residing in EU Countries.
With friends like the European Socialists and the PL MEPs at the European Parliament, who needs friends?

As a start, Mr. Schultz and the Socialist Group in the EP should move a motion on an agreement on burden sharing between all EU member states.
Letters and promises are not enough!

WE DO NOT NEED BURDEN SHARING.
WE SIMPLY NEED TOTAL REPATRIATION.
