Dr Christianne Micallef, a recently-qualified Maltese doctor at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King's Lynn, England, has been invited to join a UK Department of Health national bug-busting team.
Dr Micallef is the lead pharmacist for Infection Prevention and Control at the QEH. Her new part-time role with the Department of Health is as specialist project support practitioner with the DoH's Healthcare-acquired Infections and Cleanliness Division.
As a qualified pharmacist, Dr Micallef has contributed a number of papers on infection control to health journals and is internationally recognised for her knowledge of the superbug MRSA.
She was awarded her doctorate on the basis of a 254-page thesis on 'Developing a Model System for the study of Staphylococcus aureus Respiratory-tract infections in Cystic Fibrosis patients'.
