Pope Benedict XVI and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe discussed the fight against drug trafficking during a meeting at the Vatican.

The two men "focused... in particular on the fight against drug trafficking and social policies aimed at improving the living conditions of so many people," the Vatican said in a statement.

Colombia is the world's leading producer of coca and controls the bulk of the global cocaine processing market.

Cartels and rebel groups such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and National Liberation Army run the illegal drugs trade in the country, with right-wing paramilitary groups also taking part.
