The editor of timesofmalta.com, Christopher Scicluna, this evening won the E-Journalism award in the annual journalism awards given by the Institute of Maltese Journalists. timesofmalta.com cameraman Paul Spiteri Lucas came second.

Allied Newspapers won four awards in all, with Ariadne Massa winning the print news section and photographer Matthew Mirabelli winning the sports photo-journalism section.

Ms Massa and Times photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi also won a special award for creativity in news journalism and photo journalism.

The Institute's gold award was presented to Lino Spiteri. The award is is given as recognition of lifelong service to journalism.

The independent jury was made up of President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami, PBS chairman Clare Thake Vassallo and Dr Carmen Sammut.

The awards featured 12 categories and two special awards. The winners were chosen from 36 finalists out of 57 submissions.

The jury was composed of Anna Mallia, Mario Azzopardi, Joseph Felice Pace, Winston Azzopardi and Gino Galea.

IGM chairman Malcolm Naudi called for ethics in journalism and, referring to the European Parliament elections saying it was unacceptable that journalists were threatened in any way while on the job. Mr Naudi paid tribute to John Guillaumier, a photographer with Media.link Communications, who passed away a few days ago.

The awards, which are usually held in November, were moved to May to coincide with World Press Freedom Day.
