Fund-raising feast at Marsa Sports Club

The Marsa Sports Club will today be buzzing with fund-raising activities in aid of local charities in an annual event organised by the Friends of Richard Aquilina.

Members and non-members alike are being invited to play football, tennis, golf or squash, while children's races, tombola, a car wash and other activities will be held on and around the cricket pitch with the aim of raising money to help those less fortunate.

One of the highlights of the afternoon will be the silent auction of paintings as well as of week-end breaks in top five-star star hotels. The auctions will take place at the main entrance of the club.

Mr Aquilina was a former national football team player and a tennis playing Marsa Sports Club member who died at a young age. The fund-raising event which sprung up in his name has in the past three years raised over €32,500 for several charities including Osanna Pia House, Malta Hospice Movement, Physically Handicapped Rehabilitation Centre, Jeanne Antide Home, Holy Family for the Elderly, Ursuline Sister's Creche and Humanitarian Fund of the Millennium Chapel. Funds have also been donated to buy medicine and other costly items needed to care for a number of persons suffering from grave disabilities and illnesses.

The programme will start at noon with Mass celebrated by Fr Hilary Tagliaferro followed by lunch.
