When the personal computer was launched in the 1980s, the idea was that a person could have his or her very own machine to work with. However, there was little room for customisation. There were so much different software and hardware options.

With the rise of internet and e-commerce, the customisation of products has become a distinct new feature, making it possible for a customer to order a product according to their specific needs.

This is now perfectly possible for Maltese computers users thanks to HP, currently the no. 1 computer manufacturer in the world, and local IT consultancy company Micro Technology Consultancy Ltd, operator of MTMalta.com.

Both home users and business users can order a desktop PC, notebook or server from HP that really suites their needs. All the options are available from HP's website at www.hp.co.uk. When the features are chosen the order is submitted by e-mail to MTMalta.com which works out the price and sends out the order for the machine which is ready within six to eight weeks.

"Customisation doesn't cost anything at all," explained Philip Cortis, managing director at MTMalta.com. "Most often customers would want something in particular and when going through standard configurations available in the market, they find that only a high-end machine has that specific requirement, hence they end up buying a high end machine that has A, B, C and D when they just wanted to have B. In this case, customisation saves the customer a lot of money. A case in point is a laptop with a 12-hour battery life which comes with many bells and whistles whereas the user might just want more battery life and not more computing power."

The HP customisation includes any software that it can supply. Options include several flavours of Windows XP and Vista, Microsoft Office, McAfee and Recovery Media. Red Hat Linux and HP Linux are available on the HP Workstation range. As for HP Servers the combinations are limitless. There are over 30 different VMware and Citrix virtualisation options, Windows Server 2008, Windows SBS, Novel SUSE Linux, and Red Hat Linux operating systems. Some of the pre-installed software has a choice of language which is proving popular with foreign gaming companies.

Another customisation option is the warranty duration. Customers may want to buy a notebook with a three-year warranty instead of the HP standard one year. As per HP warranty, MTMalta.com also in a position to help customers who bought HP products from abroad and are still under warranty. In such case a nominal fee applies.
