The head of the socialist group in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, has declared that Malta has a special case on illegal immigration and needs to be given immediate attention for solutions to be found.

The declaration was made in a letter which Mr Schulz sent to Louis Grech, head of the PL delegation to the European Parliament. Mr Grech had earlier written to Mr Schulz to explain the current situation in Malta.

Mr Schulz said there was need for immediate action for burden sharing to become a reality. He was sure that the European socialists would give their support within the European institutions.

It was shameful, Mr Schulz said, that it had to be a lack of firm action by the European Union that exposed the serious issue of illegal migration.

He said that it was clear that Malta could not be expected to carry more than it could shoulder, but the spirit of solidarity was not translating into shared responsibility. Indeed, the EU was being shown to be unable to manage and address this problem.
