We refer to the letter The Tunnel Beneath The Square (April 25) in which Ray Bondin claimed that in 2003 the Valletta Rehabilitation Project had agreed to present a project of a car park and re-paving of St George's Square to then Minister Ninu Zammit.
As former members of the Valletta Rehabilitation Committee for 12 years up to August 2008, we had objected most vehemently throughout all relevant meetings to the proposal for the underground car park beneath St George's Square precisely because of the existence of the tunnels.
The minutes of the meetings, if taken correctly and precisely, will attest to this.
We were always and categorically against any excavations in Valletta including the Connections Project for the same reasons. Our stand was and still is to recover the tunnels in Valletta, map them out, disinfest and restore and utilise as an added tourist attraction in Valletta. Other members of the former committee also strongly held this view.
We cannot, therefore, understand how the Valletta and Floriana Rehabilitation Committee executive coordinator could possibly have presented the St George's Square underground car park as a committee project to the minister.
