The first European SME Week is a campaign to promote entrepreneurship across Europe and to inform entrepreneurs about support available for them at European, national and local level. It allows SMEs to discover an array of information, advice, support and ideas to help them develop their activities. Throughout 2009, events will be taking place to inform, assist and connect existing and potential entrepreneurs and also help them develop new ideas and benefit from personalised information and support. The event will be held in EU member states, Croatia, Turkey, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Israel and Serbia.

May 7-8, Research Connection 2009 Conference
The event is intended for scientists, entrepreneurs and researchers looking to learn more about successful EU-funded research and funding opportunities and to meet reliable partners for new projects. A variety of parallel sessions will cover the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and its Thematic Areas. In addition, selected EU-funded projects will be exhibited in order to promote the networking and integration of research activities in Europe. The event will be held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The conference is intended to encourage public and private research institutions to examine the role that an appropriately gendered management plays in the provision of equal opportunities, and the beneficial effect that this could have on science and technology. Human resource managers from universities and other research institutions, school-level science education experts, researchers, representatives from EU member states and non-European countries, policy makers and other stakeholders will come together to look at how young people can be attracted to research. The topic of how research organisations can improve their working environments in order to keep these women and men in research careers will also be on the agenda. May 15, Malta in the European Union: 2004-2009
The conference is being held in order to mark the fifth-year anniversary from Malta's accession into the European Union. The event will seek to analyse how Malta has fared since joining the EU by taking a look at the political, economic and social developments that have occurred, including recommendations and observations for the coming years. These findings shall be derived from a Report entitled, Malta's Membership of the EU: Five Years On and Looking to the Future, which was written by a number of expert contributors over the past year, and which shall be presented during the conference. These include understanding the environment, technological solutions, and influencing mindsets and behaviours. The Commission's Directorate-General for Research is looking to gather scientists, industry, civil society and research and development policy-makers to gain insights into their views regarding what R&D can and cannot do for sustainability. This three-day conference will also take stock of the progress made so far in the Seventh Framework Programme and identify ways and means for putting the European research system at the service of sustainable development.
