Lidl Malta last week celebrated its first anniversary since it opened three outlets in Sta Venera, San Ġwann and Luqa. In October, the company opened a fourth outlet at Safi.
David Gatt, Lidl country manager, said: "We are very pleased with the sales volumes registered during our first year of operation. Customers are very pleased with our formula as well as with the product range, with the quality of the products offered and obviously with the value of our products."
He added: "Our greatest challenge is to continue shortening the delivery times between our distribution centres and the island; we are constantly studying more efficient and effective solutions in order to continue improving our service to the customers."
Lidl Stifung and Co KG, known with the public as Lidl, is a company of a German origin and a leader in the discount market in Europe. Formed in 1930, it is part of the Schwarz Group and is present in the retail industry with two different retail formulas: the chain of discount stores known as Lidl and the chain of hypermarkets known as Kaufland.
Over the years, Lidl has built a reputation in the market that today has no limits, with more than 8,500 outlets in 23 European countries. Following France, Italy was the second nation where the German Group exported the Lidl brand, going then to the international market.
The Italian company, Lidl Italia SRL started its operations in 1991, and is based in Arcole (in Verona). Today it has more than 500 retail outlets in Italy and about 9,500 employees. Lidl Malta today employs 150 people.
