Libertas is a pan-European political movement dedicated to creating a new, democratic, accountable and open European Union.

To achieve our aim for the European Union, Libertas candidates will run in the European Parliament elections across Europe in June 2009. If you want the European Union to be better for you, then you can vote for a Libertas candidate. I have the honour to stand on behalf of Libertas as a candidate for the elections in Malta on June 6.

Libertas is the only party that is wholly focused on making the European Union better for you. It is the only party that is pan-European. This means that when you vote for Libertas you are voting for a Party that can bring about real change to make the EU open and accountable rather than a solitary voice from one country out of 27.

The Lisbon Treaty would do nothing to bring the European Union closer to its people. Despite earlier promises of referenda from many country leaders, Ireland was the only Member State that asked its people to reject or accept the Treaty. Libertas led the ‘no' campaign in Ireland. With an unexpectedly high voter turnout, the Irish people rejected the Lisbon Treaty. According to European Union law, this means that the Treaty will not come into power.

In an appalling rejection of the democratic choice of the people, the EU has refused to accept that the Lisbon Treaty is dead. Instead the Irish government, encouraged by elites in Brussels and throughout European capitals, want to ask the people to vote again. And this time, they want the people to accept what will be bad for them and bad for the future of the European Union.

I believe that the European Union has limitless potential. It is one of the most successful projects in world history. But it has lost its way. Its founders intended it to be a Europe for and of its people. The once honest and inclusive governance of the Union has become unaccountable. A vote for Libertas is essential for a strengthened and democratised European Union.
