i am with you on your comment Mr.Steve Rogers, people just cannot dwindle on the past, certainly learn from past mistakes but as you say we should now start worrying or thinking about the future, the past is dead and gone and no use saying..If & But and what if we did that.. forget it just plod on for the future and a way of making things better and easier for the Maltese and the new young generation, and its no use blameing this government or that government or any government they are all trying to the their best for a better future of this country, wakening up to reality ans see sence for business and helping small companies that are going under is the only way, chooseing a party well thats a matter of opinion for different people but at the end what counts more is the family life and the new generation bringing up young children in a steady and a safe envirement and up to a good standard that are entitled to in this modern age.

Mother companies have subsidiaries who employ a person say with three of the subsidiaries working part time for less than 20 hours with each company so as not to benefit from certain benefits, working slightly less than 60 hours per week and not paid any overtime and for the ETC the end result is three persons employed because three forms are returned to the ETC.
That is how 2,200 jobs are turned into 7,000 jobs by your Prime Minister Wistin.

R Lucia there is a difference between being positive and facing reality. if you owned a shop paying about 4,000 a year in electric bills and over what 3 years you are now facing 8,000 for the same service what would you do starve, ake out a lone or reduce your staff to compensate for your extra costings ? my right foot

I would like to know who's telling the truth. Gonzi said that 7,000 new jobs were created. Minister John Dalli is saying that only 2,200 jobs were created. Who's telling the truth?

@Steve Brockwell Govt finances are a double edged sword and if you don't pay for the electricity through your bill you will have to pay for it through your taxes. I can tell you truthfully is that the world economic recession will have an effect on Malta's economy and therefore jobs, standard of living, GDP, deficit etc. What is important is to show solidarity with the inevitable victims and to support the Govt in its work to safeguard jobs. By using cheap throwaway lines aimed solely at ridiculing without substantiating or being constructive you remind us all of that infamous TV station that has a doom and gloom agenda that tries to negatively work the people's morale. In the national interest - my left foot!!!

it just goes to show that politics being used are not working. how can anyone truthfully say that the current electric bill had nothing to do with this.

@Steve Rogers
I think you misunderstand. The Gonzi administration created 7,000 new jobs (fact) - many of those are replacement jobs that substitute 'old economy jobs' with'new economy jobs'. Fact is that Malta's economy and job market has changed markedly in these past years - and this is one reason for the country's success - and the reason you can put food on your plate.
Trying to mock the administration's success is as bad as name calling - but there are some in here that delight in trying to mock an administration that on most accounts has done incredibly well in raising our standard of living and keep the country's head above water in spite of the mega crisis that has gripped the entire globe.

It amazes me how so many people seem to understand politics, business, the economy and all sorts of themes but never actually come up with constructive ideas for overcoming problems....at least the PM and the Cabinet have been working on creating new opportunities - such as the aircraft maintenance; financial services; IT and business services not to mention the increased support for tourism. it would be wonderful if we could see those who are unemployed seizing the opportunity... we also know there are seasonal ups and downs for unemployment , so I feel sure that the opportunities will work out for them!

As regards the 7000 new jobs, the explanation is in the reply Parliamentary Question 7474:

Din iċ-ċifra toħroġ mill-istatistika dwar il-Gainfully Occupied Population ta’ Ġunju 2008. Skond din l-istatistika, iż-żieda tal-gainfully occupied minn Ġunju 2007 kienet ta’ 4953 (3426 full time u 1527 part time). Ma’ dawn wieħed irid iżid l-2,033 redundancy li kien hemm fl-istess perjodu (li ovvjament ġew replaced b’impjiegi ġodda għax kieku l-gainfully occupied population kienet tiċkien).
Dan iwassal għal 6,986 impjieg ġdid.
I would like to ask for your views whether GWU's useless battle at the Freeport of the 109,000 Euros to be incurred by Air Malta because of 3 minutes (again supported by GWU) would increase jobs.
Every job loss is a tragedy for the person involved and his/her family. We should fight to save our jobs and increase them.
I'm pretty sure that biased, populist approaches and sectorial attitudes don't help.

I can't wait for the Gonzi reaction. Most probably it will be another joke like that of gonzi himself about the creation of 7000 jobs. Also like the statement issued by Agostino Pio when he said that the roads are so bad in malta because of the PL.
GonziPN track record: deficit explosion, unemployment galore, roads becoming worse than before, inflation highest in europe, etc, etc. Par Idejn Sodi indeed!!! and what about the Finanzi fis-Sod!!! ...and the surplus in government revenue in 2010?

One has to consider also that many Maltese left Malta to work abroad when Malta joined Eu and that in the University there are many students who are undertaking study due to the fact that they couldn't find appropriate employment (I am not talking of all of the students but I know a lot who study because they couldn't find a decent job).
Whilst I am in favour of further education and employment opportunities in the EU - if you factor in these number to the statistics, then Malta is in a really bad shape.

People like Mr. P Abela amaze me yet confirm the reason why this country can not get anywhere.
Why is it we always have to bring up the past? We are living in 2009 heading to the future not to the past. If this country is to move with the times and stand on its feet it has to wake up and realise this Administration is not doing a good job. Period. I don't care what the other party did 10 years ago. I care on how I put food on the plate today and tomorrow.
Bringing up the past is politically immature, and one step above name-calling. Lets grow up and face reality. If we keep looking back at the actions of past governments why don't we just leave the EU because a past Italian government and German government decided to bomb Malta and a past French goverment decided to pillage our churches?

And here I thought that 7,000 jobs were created last year! I think Dr. Gonzi should really come clean as to where these jobs were created, for who as well as why aren't they accounted for in the statistics. I hope the self-employed and monti hawkers aren't included in the 7,000 of Dr. Gonzi.
Perhaps Lou Bondi can make a question out of this for tonight's Bondi Plus!

Put this into perspective. The US lost a staggering 500,000 jobs in March! However the loss of 915 jobs on Malta is equivalent to the loss of 730,000 in the US!

Just think what a disaster if the PN Govt had not created the 7,000 jobs! I think you forget that the record unemployment figures were in the period 97/98....which just so happens to coincide with the PL's brief flirtation with running this country....
