Following Malta's accession to the EU in May of 2004, the country held its first election to the European Parliament on 12 June 2004.
The contest to elect five MEPs attracted 27 candidates - eight each by the Nationalist Party (PN) and the Labour Party (PL), one from Alternattiva Demokratika and 10 candidates who were independent or represented interest groups or fringe parties.
The elections were conducted under the single transferrable vote system and Malte and Gozo were considered a single district.
Voter participation was 82.9 per cent. This was the highest in any member state where voting is not compulsory by lower than the average turnout for Maltese general elections.
The winning candidates who served as Malta's five MEPs were:
John Attard Montalto (PL)
Simon Busuttil (PN)
David Casa (PN)
Louis Grech (PL)
Joseph Muscat (PL)
Upon Joseph Muscat's election as Labour Party leader in April 2008, a casual election was held and Glenn Bedingfield was elected MEP until the end of the parliamentary term in 2009.
