Puttinu Cares marathon raises €427,123
A sports and entertainment marathon organised by Puttinu Children’s Cancer Support Group raised €427,123 yesterday, bringing the group just €42,000 short of the €1.2m it needs to pay for three apartments it has bought near the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London.
The apartments are being made available for young cancer patients needing hospital care in London, and their parents.
The all-day marathon was held at the Marsa sports grounds.
The theme of the activities is: Treating each patient with dignity.

Mr. C. Camilleri for the record the government only paid for the assisted passage to UK as for the hospital stay and the operation I do not think that the government pays anything as there is reprocical agreements with Uk and Malta to send patients needing special treatment in UK through the UK . NHS. RE what I meant by shame is that when thinking that the Maltese govermnet had spent €9000000 for Malta house in Brussels , surley he could have spent another few thousand Euro to purchase an apartment for those unfortunate families needing accomodation while their dear ones are having treatment at the Marsden Hospital.

Derek i think you are too harsh in yr criticism of the Govt. I understand that your grand daughter was sent to the UK at Govt's expense . So the Govt (the tax payer) has already gone a long way to help you in your trauma.Perhaps it could have adopted your idea but remember sending patients to UK is already a heavy financial burden to the Govt who has to see from where to get the money. Of course unless we are all happy to pay more taxes. So shaming the Govt for not doing a little bit more is in my opinion too harsh.

The government should pay the remaining money to buy the apartments, as many stated below.

I had experienced the trauma that one goes through. It was 14years ago when my grand daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We had to make our own way in finding accomodation costing 700 stg per month and had to pay for 6 months in advance. If it was not for the generosity of our friends and the maltese public in general it could not have been possible for us to make it. Thank God My grand daughter is fully recovered and she is now 17yrs old.
On my return to Malta after that ordeal I many times spoke to the Health Minister of that time telling him to try and purchase an apartment for the Maltese being treated at the Marsden Hospital in Sutton . There were many houses for sale at that time in the vicinity , this could be vouched for by Dr Victor Calvagna who was doing his post gradute at the Marsden during the same time .The reply was that it was not a priority of the Government. I say Shame to the governmet. The least he can do now is to come up with the remaining balance of € 42000. ¸

Only eu42000 left to pay in full for the premises in the UK for the PUTTINU CARES patients.
Therefore I urge our government to fork out the difference, and economize on some thing else, or make a deduction of 1 euro from every government employee, from their monthly wage, I am sure that we will reach our goal. How about that Mr Fenech (You have always been good with charitable handouts. Come Guys all we need a little push....

Well Said!
What about the good causes fund? Maybe this is a good way to spend that money, rather then a football match as happened in the past.
