Charles Demicoli, 34 of Birzebbuga today started undergoing trial by jury, accused of the murder of Perfecto Rabino Montalman at Cherries Bar in Birzebbuga on Christmas Eve of 2000.

The victim, a Filipino sailor, was having having a beer with friends when the incident happened.

Superintendent Carmelo Bartolo told the court that an incident had developed between a number of Maltese and one of the Maltese fell on the table where the sailors were.

Two witnesses had then seen Mr Demicoli hitting the victim on the head. One witness told the police she actually heard the blow.

The trial is being heard before Mr Justice Geoffrey Valenzia.
