Italy, Malta hold more talks on migration
Foreign Minister Tonio Borg and Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini have held talks in Luxembourg on illegal immigration.
The talks were held prior to the start of an EU foreign ministers' meeting which is also discussing migration.
The Foreign Ministry said the talks with Sig Frattini followed up last Thursday's meeting between the home affairs ministers of the two countries.
The EU foreign ministers are discussing current and future EU action towards easing the burden on Malta and Italy.
Dr. Borg told the ministers that the migration problem was a human tragedy and that other Member States should share this burden as previously agreed in the European Pact on Immigration and Asylum. Dr. Borg said that this was not only a problem of the Mediterranean, as with the opening of the borders between Member States, its effects would be felt elsewhere within the European Union.
Mr Frattini appealed for the strengthening of Frontex and the need for increased solidarity amongst Member States.

@ V. Zammit,
It is an invasion to us, when thousands and other uncontrollable large numbers decide to come uninvited, to our 314 sq. km nation, and more are on their way at their whim.
Malta never colonized these countries, we where on the receiving boot end as a colonized nation ourselves .
Malta and the Maltese have no guilty conscience to the plight of these people, we owe them nothing, we were never a colonial power.
In fact the sad truth is a lot of their nations were better governed under colonial rule.
The billions of dollars and Euros poured in as aid to these nations has done little to make them better places to live, and this is sad and frustrating, as Africa is a rich 30 million sq. km continent, not a 314 sq. km barren rock.
Maybe the people are not mentally and physically capable of improving their nations or plain just don't want to, they rather run away and burden someone else that was capable to make something from nothing and did not wallow in excuses.
Hard work goes a long way.

You are living in cuckoo land Zammit.
The Africans are invading ALL OF EUROPE with their millions and not simply a particular area.

You are perfectly correct

I wonder why a good number o f these commentators do not try to put themselves in our Ministers' and diplomats' shoes for a change, shut up their trap and think instead of blabbing incessantly - and writing nothing but nonobjective nonsense.

@ Luke Gatt, Exactly, unfortunately you have not understood what I said! The survivors can only go to Lampedusa if it is the SAFEST port! If Roberto Maroni declares that Lampedusa is FULL UP and NOT SAFE, then these survivors cannot be landed in Lampedusa! Then, what is the alternative? The nearest SAFEST port will be MALTA! ../..

The striking fact of invasion. We never heard of any African country invading any where in Europe. Actually it was the opposite. We never heard of any immigrants in EU occupying a piece of land in Europe and taking its resources. Again it was the opposite. So, the use of the word invasion, sounds good as scaremongering tool but actually it does not hold water. I am not to defend illegal immigrants, but just to remind peoples that Europe is now reaping the price of past mistakes. To all the Patriots that systemically use words such as ‘invasion’ as if illegal immigrants are coming to Malta on aircraft carriers or have been helped in the sea by B17 not to zoom and evade recklessness that add tension. This is the bait most peoples swallowed and it’s reflecting badly on Malta-unfortunately.

@ Mr Vic Vella - Boycotting the MEP elections will not do us any favors, instead we have to exercise our right to vote, but most importantly we have to use our vote wisely by not falling for these last minute tactics, which will most probably disintegrate once the MEP elections are over.

Brillian Joseph Cauchi you are really in an ubeat mood. What you have said that will not happen is exactly what happened in the Pinar E incident: they were landed in the nearest port from where they were picked up. Now tell us all where were you last week?

Reading through these comments you get the impression that the commentators feel this is a really simple problem to solve; and that the Govt is simply disinterested. If only life were that simple. As commentators we do not have the responsibility for human life wandering at sea and we do not have to weigh up all the different consequences of any action - be it veto or turning back a boat load of people or pandering to the racist undertones expressed in different fora. The Govt is clearly making inroads, slowly but surely, into turning this into an EU wide issue. But this is not a matter of dictating to the EU and stamping your feet - it is a matter that requires diplomacy and persuasion - and clearly the tide is turning....... What the Govt now needs is encouragment.

. Frontex should be ordered to turn back all the boats back to their point of departure, otherwise Malta will become the hub of all the landings of illegal immigrants. Do you think that once these illegal immigrants are picked from their sinking boat will be sent to the safest port, such as Lampedusa if they happen to be nearer to it? Of course not, they will be sent to Malta instead, as it being responsible for the SAR region and because Lampedusa would be declared by Roberto Maroni as a no longer a SAFE port and is FULL UP! Therefore, all the illegal immigrants will be dumped on to us and the figure as stated by Sig, Roberto Maroni of 40,000 illegal immigrants will become a reality! I appeal to our negotiators in Brussels and Luxembourg to keep their eyes wide open and not to fall to any trap that may be laid on them by our “friends”. Frontex’s main role should be to stop all illegal immigrants from landing on Malta’s and Italy’s shores and to force back all these boats to whence they came from! Malta Look Out! ../..

Just more words. Will strengthening Frontex make any difference except to encourage more illegal immigrants to risk the journey? I doubt it. Unless Frontex is given the authority to turn boatloads back at sea, it will only serve to increase the inward flow of illegal migrants into both Malta and Italy. This is the last thing both countries need.

All along the facebook group Save Malta From Illegal Immigration has been saying we must unite with the Italians to stop this invasion. We even created a new facebook group six weeks ago, with plenty of politicians from PN, PL and AN supporting this new group. One must ask why is the small facebook group Save Malta From illegal Immigration 1 and 2 so far ahead of the Maltese government on solutions? http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=73969345883

We've been saying the same things over and over again, we've been hearing the same things over and over again. Do the authorities, local and foreign alike, seriously believe that the Maltese public is so gullible?
