The GWU said this afternoon that it was backing the Malta Union of Teachers in its dispute with the government and the church school authorities.
The GWU said it was unacceptable that the governemnt, which should be a model employer, did not respect what was agreed in collective agreements. This sent the wrong message to other employers. It said it would back action taken by the MUT and was directing its members to join in.
The MUT has complained that several clauses in a 2007 reform agreement have not been brought into force by the government and promised talks on an addendum on improved allowances have not started. It has also accused the Church of dragging its feet on a new collective agreement.
The union has ordered a strike on Thursday.
