Biography

Labour candidate Marlene Mizzi is one of the best known Maltese businesswomen, running her own business and also boasting years of experience in government-owned enterprises.

Rabat born, Marlene Mizzi graduated in economics in 1976 and continued her studies at the Maastricht School of Management where she read for a Masters degree- M.Phil. She is currently reading for a doctoral degree, Ph.D. Her field of specialisation is Corporate Governance.

Her professional career started as a time and motion engineer with Heidemann Company Ltd. She was later production manager at Bogner Sports Company. She worked in London for Mothercare and Early Learning Centre. She also worked in banking in Finland and Switzerland.

In 1980 Mrs Mizzi set up her own company selling children and maternity wear, which has expanded to four outlets. Mrs Mizzi is chairman and shareholder in Millennium Insurance Agency and also served as chairman of Flagstone Insurance Brokers and Medfeeder Company Ltd.

She served on the board of Bank of Valletta for nine years and was director and was later chairman of Sea Malta but resigned amid disagreement with the government over the future of the shipping line.

Mrs Mizzi has served for several years as a council member of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Faculty of Economics, Management, and Accountancy of the University of Malta. Very active in sports and a travel enthusiast, Mrs Mizzi held the national record for discus throwing.

Mrs Mizzi is married to Magistrate Antonio Mizzi. They have a daughter. Her campaign slogan is Count on Me.
