Carmelo Agius (April 20) wrote that MEP candidate Edward Scicluna's "emphasis on tax methods seem to be a question of pure national politics".

Mr Agius ought to note that though the EU does not yet have a common budget and process for the redistribution of wealth (as in a normal state), the Lisbon Treaty, which has been accepted by both the Nationalist and Labour parties, provides a basis for this with the possibility of the introduction of common EU taxes even if this is contrary to the wish of the European electorate.

Libertas, the new party in Malta, is against the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty because it transfers power to the Council of Ministers whose members are not directly elected by the people and is, hence, undemocratic.
