Four Maltese doctors specialising in anaesthesiology, intensive care medicine and pain management have successfully obtained the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) diploma following an examination held on April 15 and 16 in Uppsala, Sweden.

Having completed five years of intensive training in this specialisation provided by the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Mater Dei Hospital in collaboration with the Association of Anaesthesiologists of Malta (AAM), the doctors are now eligible for specialist registration. The AAM had reached an agreement with the ESA to adopt the latter's diploma as the end-of-speciality examination, popularly called the exit exam.

This news is also encouraging for other members of the Maltese medical community in the light of the recent efforts to organise postgraduate training for all specialities.

The four doctors will be officially awarded with their diploma at the Euroanaesthesia conference to be held in Helsinki, Finland, in June 2010.

For further information contact Dr Noel Borg, registrar at Mater Dei Hospital's Department of Anaesthesia on Tel 7959 2677.
