Appreciation - Barth Attard

Joseph Zammit Tabona, writes:

It was with great sadness and a tinge of disbelief that we all learnt of Barth Attard's passing away earlier on this week. Somehow, probably because of Barth's continued involvement in his company in spite of the advancing years, it never occurred to anybody who knew him that this moment would eventually arrive.

I have known Barth for almost 40 years. In 1960, he had set up Panta Lesco Ltd, a mechanical and electrical engineering firm specialising in major infrastructural projects, which, in a relatively short time, went on to become a very important name in the construction industry, particularly in Saudi Arabia and Libya but also in Kuwait and Dubai. Under his able leadership, Panta Lesco Ltd continued to grow over the years, eventually becoming a group of nine companies operating in different fields including IT, telecommunications and desalination plants.

Some years back, Barth asked me to attend the meetings of the board of directors of Panta Lesco Group as an adviser and his drive, vision and business acumen were an example to all those who had the privilege to work with him.

Apart from his notable business achievements, Barth will also be fondly remembered for his human side. Even in times of stress, Barth's smile and wise words served to calm the waters, focusing the thinking of those around him.

He was, above all, a gentleman and he will be sorely missed by his family and by all those who had the privilege to have him as a friend.

My sincere condolences to Henry, Albert and Marion and to the rest of the family.
