PN 'surprised' by Opposition attitude to Electoral Law amendments
PN General Secretary Paul Borg Olivier said today that he was surprised by the attitude of Labour Leader Joseph Muscat, who last Wednesday strongly criticized amendments to the Electoral Law on early voting.
Dr Borg Olivier said the Opposition resistance to these changes implied discrimination against persons who had the right to vote but could not do so because they would be abroad on polling day.
The amendments provide that those who make a sworn declaration that they will be away on polling day may vote on the Saturday before.
Dr Muscat told parliament that the amendments were half baked and lacked measures for transparency. Furthermore, the amendments would only be considered if they were improved and included with a range of changes to the Electoral Law.
Dr Borg Olivier said it was ironic that European socialists had battled for migrants to be given the vote while the Opposition's behaviour in Malta would disadvantage those who already had a right to vote.
Nationalist MP Beppe Fenech Adami said that the Labour leader also appeared not to be up to the date on the work being done on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Consituttional Change.

PN Surprised!!! That's the joke of the year! As if they didn't know that PL will be against the amendments. They were done in such a way as to favour the PN, and very obvious too. If they sincerely want to be democratic, they should let the electoral process in the able hands of the Electoral Office as Joseph demanded. But of course, that would play havoc with their plans for future elections.
Result they were surprise because they thought this was going to be a walk over.

Wasn't it the deputy Prime Minister that during the debate said that one can resort to a court application to remove someone if they thought that s/he was not entitled to vote?
So how come you are now accusing the PL?

@ Dr Paul Borg Olivier You know very well - or at least you should know very well - that during the last election there was a concerted effort by your party to bring to Malta voters who were abroad even though they had no right to vote. And they did vote due to the fact that IDs have not been renewed for ages and so although working abroad for a considerable number of years and not even paying any tax or NI locally they were given a cheap almost-free holiday to Malta as long as they helped your party to secure another 5 years in offiece. Of course people "b'subghajhom dritt" want changes! And I'm not at all surprised that your party is all against any remediy to bring about fairness and justice in our electoral system.

The PL are still insecure when it comes to the real implementation of the democratic principles. their arguments are always to curtail the rights of individuals to exercise their right and duty to cast their vote. It was also interesting to read the statement issued by MEP candidate Rudolph Cini who explained the process at election time at San Vincenz; it seems Mr. Muscat was wrong when he said that the inmates at this residential hospital are threatened by PN to vote....in fact, there is a very balanced process to ensure this does not happen. I think Mr. Cini is very much more aware of these processes since he has first hand experience of what happens there! I would suggest that the PL make sure that the facts are correct before trying to hoodwink people like myself,. who need some persuasion to be convinced to vote at the next EP elections, try Harder, Joseph
