PN General Secretary Paul Borg Olivier said today that he was surprised by the attitude of Labour Leader Joseph Muscat, who last Wednesday strongly criticized amendments to the Electoral Law on early voting.

Dr Borg Olivier said the Opposition resistance to these changes implied discrimination against persons who had the right to vote but could not do so because they would be abroad on polling day.

The amendments provide that those who make a sworn declaration that they will be away on polling day may vote on the Saturday before.

Dr Muscat told parliament that the amendments were half baked and lacked measures for transparency. Furthermore, the amendments would only be considered if they were improved and included with a range of changes to the Electoral Law.

Dr Borg Olivier said it was ironic that European socialists had battled for migrants to be given the vote while the Opposition's behaviour in Malta would disadvantage those who already had a right to vote.

Nationalist MP Beppe Fenech Adami said that the Labour leader also appeared not to be up to the date on the work being done on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Consituttional Change.
