A 43-year-old man from Valletta was this morning remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to defiling a seven-year-old girl, participating in sexual activities with her and violently indecently assaulting her. He was also accused of holding her against her will and relapsing.

The case happened last January in Marsascala.

The court was told that the girl was the daughter of a former partner of the accused.

Police Inspector Louise Calleja told the court that the man should be remanded because there might be tampering of evidence since three of the witnesses were minors and related to the girl.

The court ordered a ban on the publication of the victim's name. The accused's name is not being published to protect the victim.
