Dogs rescued following reports of animal cruelty
Photo: Jason Borg
The Animal Welfare Department swooped down on a residence in Birkirkara this morning after receiving reports that dogs were being cruelly cooped up in chicken cages in a backyard.
Accompanied by police, department staff found 25 fox terriers in rusting cages without water, covered in their faeces and severely malnourished, without any shelter against the elements.
“This is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I’ve witnessed so far,” one of the department employees told The Times.
Noah’s Ark animal sanctuary and SPCA took in a few of the dogs, but unfortunately, some are in such a sorry state they may have to be put down.
The dogs seen in this photo, after being put in the rescue van, are three of the ones that are in a better condition. Described as “ferocious” by their owner, they licked their rescuers’ hands the second they were given some human affection.
Police are investigating.
See full report in The Times tomorrow.

I don't have words to express my anger towards this 'human being' or whatever he might be called. Dogs are wonderful...they can't be treated this way.Hope the laws of Malta will be amended and new laws regarding animal welfare are put forward. Animals do not have a voice and so it's up to us to protect them. I also wish for changes to be done in our educational system, so that kids are educated to love and respect animals...it's from the young with whom we should start as some Maltese are still a long way far back when it comes to animals!!They see them as lesser creatures with which you can do anything you want!!!

This is a good step for the animals at least someone is caring for them. Now we need to see drastic action towards this man who commited this cruel act. I hope he dont get a small fine and be set scott free

Hi all, actually i although i lke to comment and strongly object to the treatment to these misfortunate creatures, I THINK THE PICTURE ABOVE SAYS IT ALL! when will some people ever learn, i am utterly disgusted with the story. Yes i know from reading newspapers and watching TV ie., animal programe etc., alot of cruelty is done all over the world, but now we are concerned about this country Malta/Gozo and not the rest of the world.

If somebody do something wrong, we call him" you are like an animal" I think that this is wrong, because an animal do not harm or do wrong to us. I wish to find a word to call this, what so called human that made this cruelty to these dogs. I have a word but the editor will censor it, but with all the respect,I will be glad to call this man MONSTER. I strongly urge to all members of parliament ( not just bla, bla, bla)to make an urgent motion in parliament, with just one sitting (even if it has to be on Sunday)so they will triple the punishments for cruelty to animals. And what about those that are organizing dog fights, or this is our inheritance culture

It is as always the innocent that have to suffer. What was he thinking the owner of these poor creatures?

This rescue operation is to be commended but it should not stop there.
I would like to ask the 'owner' if these dogs were for breeding purposes? I think that is the ONLY reason why there were 25 fox terriers. Pure Maltese Fox Terriers fetch good money as they are excellent rat catchers. I saw one catching a rat, not a mouse, but a rat and it was quite awesome on the way that this fox terrier dealt with it.
The fox terrier on the right side of the photo is a prime example of a Maltese type of fox terreirs with a perfect trangle of a face with obtuse angles formed with the ears and the nose. Also it has that svelte stance. They are little wonders, hypo, attentive, alertfull, faithful and a joy to watch them walk. Lovely breed!
Would like one but I have a beautiful mongrel instead and I'm proud of her.
A word to the readers, just learn as much as you can on animals and you'll discover an amazing and wonderful world!

Why are the police even wasting their time investigating..wasting tax payer money..what a joke... ..are we suppose to be impressed with this...Like this thing is going to get more than a 100 euro fine, or a suspended sentence.......

Do we have laws like they have in the States to put people that are cruel to animals behind bars? I cannot accept calling our country civilized until we have legal enactments that cover such cruelty. We must do something about this............

The is no law for such things cause animals dont suffer they think. We have to stop them these people should be left without foor for a week and in dirt so they know what these adorable animals have gone through

An example has to be set here. People have to go to prison for a couple of years.

The expression on the dogs' faces says it all. How on earth can a "person" do such a thing and live with it everyday? Lets hope the matter will be taken seriously and looked into by the authorities. Hopefully justice will be made when evidence is so clear.

Hats off to the Animal Welfare Dept. Thank you. As for the culprit, it is difficult to say, without knowing the whole story, whether this is a case of cruelty or lack of awareness (aka ignorance). A clear cut case of cruelty would be dog-fighting - to which no perpetrator should be exculpated.

'Described as “ferocious” by their owner' It is the 'owner' who is ferocious. How about spending some time in an isolated and small cell himself, so that he would know what he has put these dogs through? This is disgusting. I am sorry that I am a human being. No wonder I feel better surrounded by animals than by disgusting people such as this 'owner'. And by the way, there is no such thing as 'owndership' over animals. We just care for them - human carers should be the term. The law in our country should be enhanced to protect animals!!!!

Well done to Dr Mario Spiteri and his Staff at the A.W. Dept for the action taken in favour of the animals. It is absolutely despicable that we, human beings, are treating other animals in this manner. It is not enough to love our own pets - we have to go beyond that and be altruistic enough to keep an eye open for animal cruelty around us. The human being has gone a long way in his intelligent metamorphosis but with regard to animal-welfare, we are still acting primitively and we are disregarding the fact that we, too, are animals. Speciesism at its worst.
