The Maltese team in the Euro/Africa Zone Group Three notched its first win after they beat Algeria 2-1 at the Marsa Sports Club yesterday.

After losing their Group A opener against Finland on Tuesday, the Maltese were determined to break their duck against the Algerians.

Kim Cassar gave Malta a fine start beating Yasmine Alkema 6-3 6-2. Elaine Genovese was next up but lost to Fatima Bouabdallah 4-6 7-5 6-3.

With the scores level at 1-1, the doubles rubber was decisive. Lisa Camenzuli and Cassar had the better of Amira Benaissa and Assia Halo 7-6 6-2 to seal Malta's win.

Today the Maltese are not in action and will resume their Group A commitments tomorrow.
