AD criticises PN for making partisan issue out of immigration

It was a pity that the Nationalist Party chose to use the immigrant issue for partisan ends, moving away from the present political consensus prevalent on the issue, AD chairman Arnold Cassola said.

He was referring to a statement on the vote in the European Parliament yesterday on a report on a common immigration policy prepared by Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil. All Maltese MEPs voted for the report but an amendment to allow migrants to vote in local elections moved by the Socialist and Green groups was approved. All Maltese MEPs voted against the amendment.

Prof. Cassola said: "It is easy but also dishonest to selectively interpret a complex and highly important EP vote. The PN's unnecessary alarm about voting rights for legal, registered and regular migrants is simply a populist vote-catching attempt which dangerously fans the flames of xenophobia, fear and racism.

"The right to vote, according to this document, is being proposed for regular migrants at local council level only, and not to irregular immigrants."

He said that a regular migrant with voting rights could be anyone from anywhere outside the EU. But the PN conveniently ignored the fact that this proposal was included in the original report presented by PN MEP Simon Busuttil to a European Parliament plenary session on Monday.

He said the PN was trying to hide the fact that all political parties were united in finding solutions for this problem.

With regards to the Green's voting record, Cassola remarked that even with Green MEPs, the vote was split with 21 in favour and 16 against.

He criticised the fact that Busuttil's report did not include a reference to obligatory responsibility sharing as regards irregular migrants.

AD complains about everything cuz they're goodie two shoes... and as always, maltese see that, so it will be a cold day in hell that their party will lead this country.. ha!

You know what is not a pity Profs Cassola? When your party garners even less votes in the coming MEP elections than it did the last time round. It's very obvious that it's now only a matter of time before AD disappears and becomes an integral part of PL. And if it doesn't disappear it would be because a few other time-wasters will hang on to Alternattiva to run it and make fun of themselves, again.

Prof. Cassola is well justified to lobby in favour of granting voting rights to migrants, regular, irregular or illegal. Those will probably be the only votes the Greens will get. Why not let trees vote too? In which case, species like Eucalyptus and Acacia will vote as well together with Carob trees and Znuber..

As usual Dr. Cassola blabs without proper research. Apart from the fact that now he is desperately trying to neutralize his position with the Maltese electorate to get UNOBTAINABLE votes, he is at the same time playing 'dare' with the Italian right wing. The thing is that if you are in politics you can never please everyone, and it's stupid to try to do so. So this carries consistency, something which is totally alien to Dr. Cassola. Also, attacking EPPall the time is your only priority on your agenda. And between attacking and criticizing there is a whole lot of difference. Also it seems that Dr. Cassola did NOT READ thoroughly Dr. Busuttil's report re quote "reference to obligatory responsibility sharing as regards irregular migrants" I can assure you it's there black on white. So please do stop your stupid and futile daily attacks. It is only damaging AD for ever more. The more I read your attacks the more I am convinced that voting EPP is the right thing to do!!!

Arnold Cassola could not see Joseph Muscat making a partisan issue out of illegal immigration in the last few months.
Now he attacks the PN after the Socialists together with the Greens in the European Parliament voted to give voting rights to immigrants.
What a staunch ally of Joseph Arnold makes!

This is an eye opener to all, we know very well what to expect. Some may say God forbid, but in this case we the voters must forbid any power run by such dangerous maneuvers. What happens after the councils and when in parliament and the changing in laws are we so stupid? Hah the greens no vote from me,No way Malta is my country and nobody is going to take it away nor my way of life until death.

If the immigration isue is going to be a vote catcher there is no consensus on immigration. There has been no consensus till the immigration pact was signed!

"The PN's unnecessary alarm about voting rights for legal, registered and regular migrants is simply a populist vote-catching attempt which dangerously fans the flames of xenophobia, fear and racism." - And interpreting this simple not-so-complex assertion, the opposite of this must be all fine and dandy for the Greens of AD. We know their stand on immigrant voting rights and opposition to them, they are opposed to such opposition.

Has anyone heard of "irregular immigrants" being regularised and thus becoming "regular immigrants"? It is often left-leaning groupings such as the European Greens and the European Socialists that in Europe and in their Member States promote such measures based on their notions of opposition to "xenophobia, fear and racism." Zapatero and Prodi anyone? Obviously, it is only they whom have the God-given right of interpreting what these terms mean in practice.

Thanks to prof. Cassola for highlighting the attitude of a party that has always sought to promote a liberal and softer immigration policy for Malta. Denying this now would be the only thoroughly populist approach in view of the coming elections. As for the Green vote being split, is it because they're opposed to voting rights? :)

Dear Arnold

Tell us who used to call illegal immigrants tourists.?
Who does not want to send them back to Libya?
That we spend 50cents each citizen each for illegal immigration.
Who wants detention period to go down to 6 months instead of 18.

The whole world knows what the greens policies are for illegal immigration.
E. Vassallo (on 23/4/09)
Dr. Cassola,

Have you got the gall to criticize Simon Busuttil? Have you forgotten that you yourself stood with the Italian left n the ITALIAN parliament??? What would have been your position if you would have remained in the Italian parliament??
I Falzon (on 23/4/09)
Guys tomorrow watch Le Iene on Italia Uno, I just came across their correspondent Luigi Pelazza and another guy filming. My guess is that it has to do with this ongoing thing between Malta and Italy.
