The Maltese team in the Euro/Africa Zone Group Three yesterday lost their opening qualifier when going down 3-0 to Finland at the Marsa Sports Club.

Eleven teams are taking part in the tournament with Malta in Group A along with Algeria, Ireland and Greece, besides Finland.

Kim Cassar went closest to obtain a point for Malta after going down to Piia Suomalainen in three sets, 6-3 4-6 6-2 in a match that lasted more than two hours. In the other singles, Elaine Genovese was beaten by Emma Laine 6-0 6-1.

Stephanie Sullivan and Lisa Camenzuli played for Malta in doubles. They went down 6-3 6-3 to Suomalainen and Laine.

Today, Malta play their second match against Algeria, starting at 11 a.m.
