Melita starts laying submarine cable
Melita has started laying a fibre-optic submarine cable to Sicily in a €10 million project which will give Malta the fourth communications gateway to Italy.
The project kicked off last year, when a detailed survey of the seabed was carried out to determine the route which the cable will follow.
Following an international tendering process, the project was entrusted to a consortium formed by NSW and Italtel Group.
Melita said this project was part of a long-term investment to provide an enhanced experience to its clients, catering for the increased technological needs of the local market.
Malcolm Briffa, Melita’s Head of Marketing, said the commencement of the works was a major milestone in Melita’s drive for a fully integrated network.
Currently, Melita has over 50,000 customers subscribed to its broadband internet service.
Malta is currently connected to Sicily thanks to two submarine cables operated by GO and another operated by Vodafone.
The new cable links the Melita headend at Madliena via Baħar ic-Cagħaq and Pozzallo in Sicily.

To Tony Zammit - I do not moan but Melita Cable have requisitioned part of my front garden for their profit making concern and now they have stuck a mobile phone antaenne just 15meters from my bedroom window. Just to make you aware all this is in line with the "Utilities and Services Act " as amended in 2000.What do you expect me to do .?

Hopefully some of that money is to tarmac the mess they did in the roads in the vicinity leading from their premises to the sea.

They have discharged a lot of their workers because someone on top decided that they did not need so much workers but only top brass. That is one of the reasons why their services have been going from bad to worse because they do not have the manpower to give a decent service. I shall always stay away from them and not touch them or their services with a barge pole.

@Adriana Tabone, stefan scerri Normally customers think about discounts, as shown in other comments, not about the employment statistics (which, by the way, Melita did terminated employment in the last couple of weeks, but that is not the point) For me, you are both employees (PS. No spacegoat for Go and Voda)

I doubt that the price of Broadband will go down very quickly as they will have to recover the 10m investment (unless they are getting a cut from the speed camera on the St Andrews hill which would probably pay for the cable in total at the snail pace allowed on this hill). It would be nice if Melita could sort out their TV cable transmissions so that the sound and the picture arrive in sync. Currently they are often out of sync and the remedy to "Switch off the top set and Switch back on again" is a naff way of trying to rectify a problem probably caused by low grade transmission, low grade equipment supplied or both, at high prices.

I understand you my friend. You are absolutely right. Two months ago I need to increase my bandwidth connection. I tried calling but it was impossible, then I emailed them several times, but guess what .. they do not reply to my emails, (Mr. Malcom Briffa please take note, thanks) finally I had to resort to snail mail, which guess what they did reply .. hurray .. but they failed to action my requests... so I had to pick up the phone and ... had to stay waiting like you my dear friend :( ..apart from the fact that the last bill they sent me is wrong .. :! so I have to pick up the phone again .. i feel like crying

What a breathe of fresh air to read about a company that is looking positively to the f uture in the midst of all the doom and gloom. Competition is a great thing, maybe this will inspire the other telecoms companies in Malta to pull their socks up too?

Well done to Melita - while other companies talk about downsizing and cost cutting they are not afraid to invest into projects that translate into better services for us, the customers. Keep it up Melita!!

They are laying a €10m euro cable and in the same time they cannot provide a remote control to my cable tv box because they are out of stock. They've been out of stock for one month and a half now. Apart from that I had to wait 10 minutes for an answer this morning. When will Melita start focusing on customer care?

Does this mean that the cost of internet service from Melita will be going down considering they will no longer have to purchase bandwidth from Go and Vodafone?
Hopefully now competition will drive the cost of broadband down along with providing faster speeds.
