Updated: Isle of MTV line-up announced
Black Eyed Peas, Lada Gaga, Metro Station and Esmée Denters for Malta show
(Adds video clip, details)
MTV Networks International (MTVNI) today announced that The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Metro Station and Esmée Denters will perform at the Isle of MTV music event in Malta on July 8. The artists will play in a free live concert on the Granaries in Floriana in front of a crowd expected to top 50,000.
“We are thrilled to be announcing a world class line up for what promises to once again be one of the summer’s must-see musical events. The Isle of MTV Malta is unique in offering young people across Europe an exclusive opportunity to experience some of the world’s best new and established artists in the sunshine of Malta,” said Jules Robinson, SVP, Viacom Brand Solutions International.
“This event has become a vital annual destination for music lovers from across Europe and we are delighted to be a part of it now for the third year running. For MTV, it’s a great opportunity to work with Malta in producing a stunning event in such beautiful surroundings and on a holiday island location.”
MTV will broadcast in an hour-long live special airing across MTV’s pan-European network in September. The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco, said that Malta was proud that for the third time running, the islands would host such a high-profile musical event.
“We invite music lovers from all over Europe to come and experience what Malta is all about: music, fun, sun, sea, history and so much more. We look forward to welcoming you, as we’re sure that once again, we will be offering an experience which is hard to forget.”
He said that in July 2006, there were 34,000 aged up to 24 who visited Malta, but that had increased to 42,000 in 2007, when the first concert was held in Malta, and 46,000 last year.
Malta Tourism Authority CEO Josef Formosa Gauci said that the MTA would be promoting the event and offering packages which include flight, accommodation and tickets to the Malta Music Weekend which will cover July 3-8.
The Black Eyed Peas are one of the world’s most successful recording artists, gaining global recognition for their breakout album, Elephunk and the singles ‘Where is the Love?’ and ‘Shut Up’ and the subsequent triple platinum album, Monkey Business which sold more than nine million copies worldwide and spawned the Grammy Award-winning singles, ‘Don’t Phunk With My Heart’ and ‘My Humps’.
In Malta, they will perform tracks from their fifth studio album, ‘The E.N.D’, due for release in June and including the single, ‘Boom Boom Pow’.
Lady Gaga is making a welcome return to Isle of MTV Malta after rave reviews for her performance at last year’s event. She hit the big time earlier this year with her number 1 hit singles ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Poker Face’.
At just 22, Lady Gaga made a name for herself on New York’s Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song ‘Beautiful Dirty Rich,’ and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek shock art performances. She wrote the lyrics and melodies on her current album, ‘The Fame,’ an infectious mix of two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock.
An Internet phenomenon and now an MTV ‘Push’ breakthrough artist, Metro Station, are bringing their energetic electronic dance-pop to Malta. The LA band formed as 17 year-olds back in 2006 and their first single, "Shake It", has already become a Top 10 hit across Europe. Metro Station released their self-titled debut album in Europe in March 2009 and continue to build on their multi-platinum success back in the US.
Dutch singer-songwriter Esmée Denters is undoubtedly on her way to musical stardom. Signed to Justin Timberlake’s Tennman Records, the 20 year-old started out posting videos of herself singing on YouTube and now can count some of the best-known songwriters and producers amongst her collaborators, as well as writing songs with Timberlake himself. She brings her edgy, soulful pop-R&B sound to Malta, including her first single ‘Outta Here’, a hybrid of urban beats, pop lyrics and rock attitude.
Video clip above shows scenes from last year's concert and related publicity.

An MTV line up through and through! So what is the point of all you rock fans arguing about “not enough” rock or “no rock again.” The point of these events is not for the elitists but rather “music for the masses”. Do you think rock “tourists” are going to travel to Malta to see their favorite rock band(s) when mainland Europe & UK have their summer rock festivals. The list is too long! So stop complaining!
I’m a huge rock fan myself and chose not to go to these events simply because there’s nothing in it for my tastes.
I chose however to go to the THERAPY? concert being held next week at SKYCLUB on the 30th April. These guys are true legends spawning numerous hits and MTV nominees. All the information was in last Sunday’s interview done by Michael Bugejja. Those who missed the Sunday edition, well here’s the contacts that were listed for tickets: 79593116 or 79992136.

Number 1: Its a free concert!
Number 2: Its being sponsered and HEAVILY promoted by MTV, which means it can only benefit the island and the tourism industry.
Number 3: Did I mention its FREE???
Stop your complaining about the line up.. or the fact that "maltese" artists arent headlining the show. Its a EUROPEAN event, in a wonderfull location, and costing a great deal of cash to organize. Be thankfull it wasnt cancelled this year!

Why do we have to complain or find faults in every single thing!

@Deirdre Farrugia:
In that case you just wish to be seen ... how can you enjoy something if you know nothing about it? That's why things never improve here - we just recycle the same thing over and over and copy other people ... and people just flock to see what-ever it is because there is nothing else to do!!!

wHAT WORLD CLASS LINE UP, APART FROM THE BLACK EYED PEAS THESE ARTISTS ARE JUST STARTING OFF A MUSICAL CAREER AND ARE BEING PROMOTED THROUGH THIS GIG ON OUR SHORES.
IT WOULD BE DISGRACEFUL IF ONCE AGAIN WE DO NOT PUT OUR LOCAL ARTISTS ON THAT STAGE IN ORDER TO TRY AND PROMOTE OUR OWN
WE DO HAVE THE TALENT BUT UNFORTUNATELY THIS COUNTRY HAS NEVER YET SUPPORTED THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE

Oh give over all of you! I don't know half of them or their music but I'll still go and have a good time! My God all us Maltese seem to do is moan and grumble about everything!

As always we try to be like other countries, but I think we better do nothing than organizing such an event with this line-up. Why is Lady GaGa coming again? And the rock bands?
To whom it may concern (the Organizers)
Do you ever heard of artists like The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, R.E.M, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Oasis, The Verve, Coldplay, Keane, Dido, Robbie Williams, Kings of Leon, Limp Bizkit, Lenny Kravitz, Radiohead, Snow Patrol, Bodyrockers, Evanesence, Foo Fighters, Goo Goo Dolls, Nickelback, Pink, Beyonce, Rihanna?
One more question....Is there going to be some Maltese perfoming? Ira Losco? Winter Moods? Scar? Tribali? Eve Ransom? Airport Impressions?

Typical Maltese mish-mash fare ... welcome to the 2012 winners of the "Where are they now?" award. Honestly can't we do anything differently? Please there are people in this world that LOVE ROCK. If I was forced to watch this line-up I'd sleep the songs and "artists" are so derivative! Anyhow ... I look forward to watching Radiohead here in Malta when Jonny Greenwood turns 65 ('cause that's the age where we decide that a rock-star is affordable enough to bring to this island).

Anyway all you rock lovers look no further than April 30th when THERAPY? (the Irish legends) hit our shores to open their "Crooked Timber Tour" Here's a link to refresh your memories: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDVsIvvFtcs. This is the same band that gave us massive hits such as SCREAMAGER, NOWHERE, etc. Tickets are out and can be bought from Urban Culture Cathedral Street Sliema or Urban Culture Merchants Street Valletta or else send me an sms on: 79593116 and we’ll make the necessary arrangements and delivery.

"Malta Tourism Authority CEO Josef Formosa Gauci said that the MTA would be promoting the event and offering packages which include flight, accommodation and tickets to the Malta Music Weekend which will cover July 3-8."
"Would be promoting"? What are they waiting for? The event is just three months away!!!! Packages should have been on the market two months ago!!!!

as a metal-music fan this kind of line up does not impress me at all... but for the sake of tourism from an economical standpoint, events like these are to be welcomed. Pity that the line up is not representative as they only get artists of particular genres... I always have to end up going abroad in summer to see bands which I like !!

Well done! You've almost beaten Ibiza.
Now please don't tell us that you want to attract up market tourists. Malta will keep attracting the mish mash and partying students!

Isle of MTV ... what do you mainly find on MTV? Commercial and Pop music obviously!
What do you expect then? It's a good line up suited for the crowd the MTV wants to target. So I don't get it what's all this roaring. Congrats to the organizers!

Fans of this line-up are getting a great show for free. Depeche Mode for free? That's a bit much, I could not get hold of tickets for a massive venue such as the O2 in London let alone.

I can't believe those negative reactions here! I'll be coming to Malta in July and the main reason is this festival and the music week. The festival is FOR FREE and includes Lady Gaga who is huge worldwide at the moment. Also BEP are fantastc. For me (I go to lots of festivals in Europe) the isle of mtv is one of the best! Great setting, good music and on a beautiful island!!

Winter Moods, Ira Losco, The Riffs and Freddie Portelli would have made a much better line-up.

If you guys want to see some proper rock acts, then go to a festival somewhere in Europe in summer. Rockwerchter, Glastonbury, Leeds, Reading, Pukkelpop, Oxegen, T In Park etc etc etc. With low cost flights and sleeping in tents, such a trip won't break the bank either. Check out the lineups of these festivals to know what I mean.
It's useless hoping for something decent in a nation of "tribute bands" and "radio fodder."

what about The Killers and Cold play??? why is lady gaga coming again??
J.Azzopardi
Apr 20th 2009, 19:03
I like Lady Gaga.. not sure about the rest.. Metro Station are okey I guess but I would have loved a little more rock in the line up The Killers would have been amazing even alone or with Gaga.. BeP are just too Hip Hop now in my opinion I preferred their previous album and live they ain't so good.. Esmee what's her name just needs to get a life and keep posting videos on youtube sorry but I had to be blunt

This line-up is simply a joke! And its quite obvious that the only attraction to this event is that its free. Everyone would tell you that beyond our coasts they fare light years better then us so might as well save our money to spend out of this country on a concert which is worth it's money. Even the concert being held at the end of this month (I'm avoiding advertisments) is much better.

Apr 20th 2009, 16:34
Congrats to the organisers for this event. It requires a lot of hard work. The only small complaint that I may have is that we are getting the same artists twice. It is true that they release new albums, but do we really need Lady GaGa and previously Enrique to come again?
C.Camilleri
Apr 20th 2009, 16:14
This is something good for tourism and for Maltese people who like pop and commercial music. Hope this summer we will have something else which is different..something more serious musicwise...like previous events which brought huge artists to our small island like Iron Maiden, The Wailers and Ziggy Marley.

I was happy with this line up mostly for Esmee Dentres, I followed this girl from the beggining on youtube, before she started getting popular. Now that she is coming here I am happy to see her live. For the others, it is good not having Enrique again , but agree that there can be better singers. If Black Eyed Peas came here 4,5 years ago it was ok but not now. And to end with was it ever possible to have Kevin Borg in this festival?

I agree with D. Azzoppardi. Having both Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas, together, for free, is GREAT! Better than having Enrique Iglesias, like the previous two years - Bo-oring! *yawns*

Apr 20th 2009, 15:29
@ N. Azzopardi frankly i'd rather see the likes of kings of leon, white lies, or the killers on our isle rather than lady gaga and BEP, though the formers will be too busy touring europe this summer in various music festivals which hence will leave no option for the organizers

Im amazed that after such an exciting line up people still say that it is boring!!! Maybe they dont have a clue who Lady gaga is!? She is the Number 1 artist this year, with 2 consecutive number one singles all over the world and a number 1 album. And as for the Isle of MTV 'RnB special', neither lady gaga nor esmee denters nor metro station are RNB acts therefore that comment makes no sense.

Apr 20th 2009, 14:52
What happened to rock bands? Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs, White Lies, Interpol, The Killers would have all been an excellent choice people would want to come Malta! With this approach I suggest the organisers go a bit further and rename it to "Isle of MTV - RNB Special?" and why do we keep booking the same artists again and again?

Oh dear, just shows how old I am - never heard of any of them or, by name, any of their music - I suppose the children might enjoy this and to be truthful, they are welcome to it LOL
Just hope that it is a good advertisement for Malta and does not give anyone the wrong impression - would not like to think that it would encourage more young female tourist topless dancers in bars to get into trouble by upsetting the Police at 5.30 am.

well done on this initiative. this goes to show that Malta is not just a destination for grannies and grandpas. let's hope that a mess is not left behind the morning and weeks after, like what is happening with most mass events. please remember that the area is highly frequented by tourists and cruiseliner passengers.

Well done to the MTA and Mario deMarco for yet another event to look forward to. I will be there for sure, even though I would have liked to see a rock act too... maybe next year.
