Electoral register published
A revised Electoral Register for general and local elections as well as the European Union Electoral Register have been published, the Electoral Commission said.
Any person who had the necessary qualifications to be registered as a voter on the closing date 31st March, 2009, and whose name has not been included in the register and every voter whose designation, address or other particulars have not been shown correctly has to appeal to a Revising Officer to have his name included or his particulars corrected in the respective Electoral Register.
A list of all persons registered as voters is being made available at police stations,at the local council offices and at the Electoral Office.

As a citizen who has turned 18 this February how should I know if I am eligible to vote? Going through A Levels at this point and I have no time to look through a list of names at the police station. I hope I am able to vote.

It should be the duty of the Electoral Commission to ensure that all qualified voters are included .Anything short of this approach will lead to corrupt practices .I need not expand or express myself further.

I agree 100% with Mr L.Galea. The whole register should be available for download.

Because ID cards may be renewed by the person who happens to be here on holiday and yet s/he may not be entitled to vote according to law. If he has an ID card then the voting document will still be issued. That is why the PL had suggested that the issue of the voting document be based on the person paying income tax in Malta because we may have people who have been away for years, not paying any tax in Malta, not entitled to vote and still their voting document is issued on the basis of having a valid ID card and determining the general election results. If the government wants to be believed that it really wants elections to be fair and democratic it should adopt such a proposal.

@Jesmond Zammit What difference does it make if the id card is expired - and besides - won't we be getting election specific id cards just before the election?

Computing should do away with the publishing of twice-yearly electoral registers, and the loss of the vote of people reaching voting age between the publishing of the register and any election. The register could be constantly updated, taking account of new electors, deaths, and what have you, and be consulted online, without the need for publishing on paper. Of course, this depends on legislation, which, however, is long overdue over electoral matters.

The whole register should be available for download. After all, it is in the public interest to know who has a right to vote and to be able to check that those who do not have a right to vote are not included. If it is not published it means that the authorities have something to hide.

Is this register available on line? If it is, what is the URL - If not, why not, it would save an awful lot of time and trouble trying to find out if your details are correct or not.
