Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel this morning took a surprise pole position for tomorrow's Formula 1 GP in China, ahead of Spain's Fernando Alonso.

The 21-year-old German grabbed the second pole position of his career with a last-gasp lap of one minute 36.184 seconds at the Shanghai International circuit.

Renault's Alonso will line up alongside him on the grid fortomorrow's race after posting a final lap of 1.36.381 while Australian Mark Webber (1.36.466) was third in the other Red Bull.

Rubens Barrichello was the first of the two Brawn GP cars in fourth while his British team mate Jenson Button, who won the first two races of the season from pole and leads the championship, was fifth fastest.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen is eighth and McLaren champion Hamilton, ninth. Their team mates Massa and Kovalainen are 12th and 13th.

The race starts at 9 a.m. (Malta time).
