Paramedics to bring woman from Cambodia
Paramedics will fly to Cambodia today to bring back a young woman who was injured in a traffic accident almost two weeks ago.
Lisa Gatt, 25, is being cared for in a small clinic in a rural village where she underwent surgery.
According to her sister Lia, she was riding on the back of a motorcycle when the accident happened. Unconscious, she was taken to a nearby clinic where she underwent surgery for a broken thigh bone - during which she is said to have been conscious. She is now facing hefty medical bills.
The International Federation of the Red Cross and the Cambodian Red Cross have now helped the Malta Red Cross send paramedics to bring her back from the clinic, which has agreed to keep her under observation until their arrival.
The Malta Red Cross had initially dropped plans to send paramedics over when it failed to get in touch with its Cambodian counterparts.
Donations to pay for her medical expenses, which the family can't afford, can be made at the Malta Red Cross at 104, St Ursula Street, Valletta; at Room 6, University of Malta, Xewkija or in Bank of Valletta account 102 0637 4012.

@Franco Farrugia - if all tax payers donated a single Euro, (definitely not a BIG DEAL) we would have got Lisa in a private jet I guess!!!
So this happened to Lisa Gatt, but what if it happened to a close relative of yours??
"The pity is that the accident did not happen in December, Christmas time, maybe things would have had a different approach." Ghax ahna l-Maltin fil-milied biss naghtu donazzjonijiet!!!!!
Let's celebrate CHRISTMAS all year round!!!!!
Thanks to the ppl who help in donating money, time, energy etc... etc...

All I can is what would I would 'ave done had it happened to my daughter.
I would never have allowed her to go on her own to such a country.
I would never have allowed her to go w/o insurance - no matter how expensive it is.
I, as her parent would have paid the money to get her back! No money ? Get a loan from the banks, get a loan from the greater family and friends.
The bill to get the daughter back should be posted to her daddy.
This is not a case of rubbing it in, this is a case that from now on, people will not take insurance and expect to be brought over for free, because of this (past by then) case.
Now I know, family and friends or do-gooders" will see these comments as cruel, however we need detached people to think these things through not injured parties, for FAIR TO ALL decisions.

Lisa Gatt left for Cambodia in November. We are in April. Dose a holiday/experience need that long time in such a country and without any insurance?

@c.camilleri and r Gauci
Yes it is a nice place to visit and the people there are wonderful despite the fact its really poor. Fear is what i find stupid. All we hear are horror stories and this is what make ppl become paranoid freaks. People who are fearful and carry negative energy are more prone to draw bad things.

@ Mr. Camilleri
I believe that everybody is responsible for his own actions. If you drive carefully and still have an accident I would jump into a burning car to save your life but if you drive recklessly and smash into a tree I won't even bother to call you an ambulance and just drive by.
If you go to Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. for a "holiday" just because Leo Di Caprio did that in his last movie, most probably against everyone's advice, leaving behind distraught parents, travel uninsured, look for danger by riding on motorbikes with God knows whom and you have an accident then I'm sorry I'll leave you there to fend for yourself and make up for your mistakes and if that means you'll have to spend the next 2 years in a hospital in that country then let it be it as that will also be part of the adventure you looked for, adventures don't always turn out to be positive ones; that's why they are called so.

@ Mario Martinelli - I think that we are all paying for her return, one way or another - we are the tax-payers, do not forget.
@ P. Attard - I am sure that even the air ticket to Cambodia was not inexpensive - yet, I am sure that it was paid, and how. And yet ... no insurance!

Is Cambodia the right place for a girl of 25yrs to take a holiday knowing how things are run in that country?

Dear All,
Hope no one called a Catholic, donates money to get something back like what happens at Xmas time, thus maybe winning a car or a trolley full of vouchers etc...etc...!!! Who doesn't want to donate and help others, should SHUT UP.
Hope everything turns out fine for family Gatt and all those who go through such a trauma.

Whilst everyone is saying that this poor girl should have been insured they dont realise how expensive insurance is when one is travelling on a long journey.
I found Maltese travel insurance products really unattractive and expensive. I never found a medical travel insurance package only. In other EU countries there are medical travel insurances for about 10euros for 3 months. Besides that, the insurances I looked into did not offer repatriation in case of serious injury or death so most of the comments on -"she should have been insured" are baseless because repatriation would not be covered anyway.
And another point some insurances wont let you look at their medical policy unless you BUY their product, so once you bought it you're stuck with it!!!

@ Mr Spiteri: I think you are unfair. And some words that the two people you attack are saying, are in order: Cambodia is NOT the place for a 25 yr old girl, alone, should visit. Least said, soonest mended.
Since this affair was brought to the public eye, it is only fitting that the public should comment. No?

Messrs Finch and Gauci - You're very right in saying that she should have taken an insurance but what do you suggest is done at this stage ?? Do you suggest she is left there because she didnt have the sense to take an insurance out ? What's done is done and i think she is paying enough for her mistake. Thank God that the Red Cross will be getting her back. To the Gatt Family i say, also Thank God that there are kind people around, people who have already helped you alot. You wouldnt like alot of Finch's and Gauci's around as that would get you nowhere !! And we call ourselves Catholics !

@ Mr Camilleri: Ever heard the expression: 'to put your money where your mouth is'? The Maltese authorities are right in bringing back the woman, of course - they should have done it earlier, jumped to it!
That having been said, she will have to foot the bill, not the country. Let it be a lesson to her, not to be foolish and irresponsible, especially to her family! God know the worry she has put them through!

@Mr. Finch, Mr. Gauci
Travelling without insurance and to such a country is a mistake, however I don't think it is fair to continue rubbing it in. Everyone makes mistakes, she deserves help like anyone else. Just giving an example, aren't many accidents on our roads caused by recklessness? We do not leave motorists lying injured on the ground if e.g. we know that they were intoxicated, but give them medical assistance.
Prosit goes to the Red Cross who finally made arrangements to send a team, so that she will be given the right medical care.

I agree with Mr. Finch 100%
With all due respect I think that Cambodia is not the country where a 25 year old girl should travel to all by herself and most of all uninsured. Unluckily many Maltese youngsters today are influenced by movies and travel to these poor countries tipo India, Vietnam and Cambodia to perhaps for the sole reason to find their lost karma, sense of adventure or some other nonsense excuse. In my opinion she should have gone to Disneyland instead.
I find it unfair that after all this someone else has to foot the bill and not who's responsible for such an act of carelessness. I donate money but not for such causes I'm sorry.

So she could afford to go to Cambodia, but couldn't afford insurance?
There are people who desperately need medical assistance and cannot afford their medical bills through no fault of their own. Lets have a campaign for these people instead, not someone who travelled without insurance then rode on the back of a motorcycle knowing they weren't insured!
