No consultation on shipyards privatisation - GWU
The GWU complained today that it had not been consulted on the privatisation of Malta Shipyards since the call for offers closed.
In a statement, the union said its general secretary, Tony Zarb, wrote to the Finance Minister on February 25 seeking consultation as agreed between the two sides last September 5.
Mr Zarb also wrote to Mr Fenech on March 12, informing him that the shipyard was refusing profitable ship repair and galvanising contracts. Indeed, the Galvanising plant had been closed.
But nothing had been heard from the minister. The GWU said this delay was unwarranted and it was calling for consultations to be begin immediately.

When Zarb was the GWU representative when Anglu Fenek was in charge . The only help that the then Dredging Works Company ( ie The dredger IL Kennies ) we got from the GWU was once during the Nuclear boycot the dredgers crew were threatheningly removed from the dredger by a few people from Kalaxlokk company , with a man with an English surname but well known within the GWU that at the moment escapes me and a few weeks later at a meeting at the Memorial Building we were asked what could the GWU do for us ? They helped a lot as we got thrown out . Another success on the GWU CV. Yes BUTT OUT . The GWU did it's utmost for the Dockyard ,now I repeat BUTT OUT . The Dockyard belongs to the Maltese people and the GWU has now no say in what happens to it , It's done enough . If it is left to interfere the result will go on it's Brilliant CV ( Sic )

C J Zammit.....Do you know anything about consultation, or honouring an agreement?
J Oatman as usual regales us with his usual anti union rhetoric and ignores basic facts.
Yes, money went down the drain at the Dockyard....But who squandered it..we wonder..
Of course, if J Oatman knows otherwise, then he could save the country and prove where this money was lost, so those responsible could be prosecuted.

You have bleeded the dockyard to death and squeezed millions of Euros from our pockets. What consultation are you talking about. The mind boggles.

I do not see why any organisation involved in a privatisation of a failed company, would want to consult with the union (GWU) whose hard nosed attitude was the root cause of the failure of the shipyards.
Is the GWU involved by putting up any money, or is it bidding for the company? If not then the GWU is not part of the sale/privatisation process, and therefore should not be consulted.
I am sure that any potential bidders for the shipyards, would not want to have to deal with unreasonable union interference.
I believe the GWU caused the shipyards to fail previously, and drained the Maltese people of millions by way of the government financially propping up the shipyards, and the aristocratic work practices of the shipyard workers, for years and years.

Hmm . . . union whinging aside, it is a BIG PITY that the Galvanizing Plant at Malta Shipyards has been shut down. The plant used to provide an excellent Galvanizing service and the quality of their product was right up there amongst the best, moreover, their Galvanizing tank was the biggest one available locally.
The current situation leaves people with a severely curtailed choice of Galvanizing service providers. If the situation is allowed to deteriorate further this may risk resulting in a market where the remaining providers would be in a dominant or monopolistic market position with all the undesirable effects of an under-serviced or monopoly market.

Mr. Zarb, haven't you noticed that the P.N. Government is ignoring the GWU. The P.N. government has it's plans and is proceeding according to plans.
Were the Chambers of Commerce to communicate with the Government it will be more than eager to consider any matter and pass on its opinion on the subject, mostly it will agree with any Chamber of Commerce request. Remember that the Cof C represents the business men; while the GWU represents only the Maltese workers. What can one expect from the government of Smurfs.
