Malta and Jordan have signed a double taxation avoidance agreement, the first between the two countries.

During a visit to this country, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg held talks with his counterpart Naser Jodeh and Finance Minister Bassem Salem. The former accepted Dr Borg's invitation to visit Malta. He is expected to visit later this year.

Malta and Jordan also agreed to set up a Business Council between the two countries.

Dr Borg said that the agreement he had signed would help reduce unnecessary burdens, facilitating trade between the two countries. It would also help to increase efforts to combat fiscal evasion. The setting up of a business council would help strengthen commercial ties with Jordan.

Jordan was the last country that Dr Borg visited during hias trip to the Middle East. He also visited and signed agreements with Syria and Lebanon. He is expected back in Malta tomorrow.
