Clement Freud dies aged 84

British writer, broadcaster and former parliamentarian Clement Freud, the grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, has died at his home in London, the BBC reported. He was 84.

Freud, who was born in Germany in 1924, led a rich and varied life, ultimately becoming a popular commentator and guest on radio and television, but also finding time in a long career to be elected to parliament and to have been a celebrity chef.

He died at home on Wednesday evening, the BBC said, without identifying the cause of death.

Freud had a drole, dead-pan delivery on radio that endeared him to audiences across generations. He appeared on the BBC panel game "Just a Minute" for more than 30 years, entertaining with his dry, witty delivery.

He was elected as a Liberal member of parliament in 1973 and served for nearly 14 years, although he at first struggled for acceptance in the cliquey and clubby world of politics.

Freud, the brother of artist Lucian Freud, is survived by his wife and five children, several of whom are involved in the media and the arts, and 17 grandchildren.
