Labour Youth Forum says no to stipends removal
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was hiding behind the University Rector's proposal to turn the stipends system into loans, the Labour Youth Forum said.
The recent declaration by the Education Ministry that it would experiment and be creative with the stipends system was "orchestrated to pave the way for the removal of the stipends", the forum claimed.
Rector Juanito Camilleri had said students should choose whether to get stipends and pay them back gradually once they graduated or opt out of the system and receive future tax breaks instead.
The proposal was backed by the Governor of the Central Bank but the forum believed this was just a rehash of the 1997 proposal that was turned down by students.
The forum said it would never accept a move by the government to burden students with loans after the promises it made in recent months to retain them. It was unacceptable for the government to bring up such a discussion.
The forum claimed that, since the government reduced the monthly grant to students some years ago, many were already facing financial difficulties as it was, let alone if stipends were to be removed as a whole.

All I know is that the PM promised NEVER to touch stipends and INSTEAD he also promised to increase the stipends where necessary...SURPRISE SURPRISE the election is over and here comes a very well planned PN strategy in which the PM hides behind the university rector's opinions and the Governor of the Central Bank.....it seems that someone wants to get clean out of this issue...I hope that the students will unit and turn down such a proposal to remove the stipends this time...

@Karl Abela.
That's the difference between the PN and the PL. FZL declared that PL's stipends policy adopted in 1997 was REJECTED. The same policy will be rejected NOW, whether its a PN or a PL government.
It's clear now. PN only speaks about the past, about what happened 12 years ago, about who was in favour or against the EU.
My concern is today, and tomorrow.
Mr. Karl, where were you 12 years ago? and where are you today?

FZL Labour Youth Forum, are defending their rights and those of other present and future university students, a job they should be doing, other youth organisations including non-political organisations should also be defending the rights of students.
as to Karl Abela .... that was 12 years ago, you did not tell us where you were or where you are now. Can't one live the moment and look ahead?

@ Mr. Karl Abela
Your comment was really relevant to the issue that present and future students are facing.
The stipend issue is of great importance as we are already at the lowest places in post-secondary and tertiary education participation.
Mr. Saliba seems to rely very much on what the PN said before the elections, the thing is that policies which were not mentioned previous to the elections were applied, and things which were said that are in the pipeline to be implemented haven't even been mentioned by the Governement. Take Partnership for Peace for the former and measures to reduce precarious work for the latter.
Still evaluating your precious and valuable comment Mr.Abela. Very well thought :)

The prim minister Dr. Gonzi declared that the government has no plans of removing stipends and this is FINAL. Taxes are grabbed from our pockets to support the Maltese economy mainly towards a better future for our children and not for the illegal immigrant's. We voted PN for a better and brighter future and simply do not accept any negative changes in the stipends. Let's not confuse our dedicated students who are currently focusing on their studies and kindly ask the government to analyse other areas that are draining money to support the so called single mothers and the so called unemployed.

Where were the Labour Youth Forum when Alfred Sant was in government and made a mess out of the stipends?
