Coalition demands other studies on Għadira Road
The planning authority is being urged to carry out independent studies to verify the urgency of the proposed construction or upgrading of Għadira Road.
The Għadira Coalition, which comprises 10 organisations, said it had written to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to carry out the necessary studies. The studies should include an environmental impact assessment, a traffic impact assessment and a social impact assessment.
The Għadira Coalition includes Żminijietna, Alternattiva Demo-kratika, the Science Students' Society, Moviment Graffitti, Friends of the Earth, Inizjamed, the Labour Youth Forum, Greenhouse, the General Workers' Union Youths and farmers' representatives.
The government has submitted three applications to replace the existing Għadira Road.
The first option is a new 15-metre-wide road passing the Danish Village (an area that is already disturbed) and over a bridge resting on three pylons connecting the road to the existing green caravan site.
The second option would have the new road developed over an existing one, a few metres inland and then over the bridge to connect the road to the caravan site.
The third option, already submitted in 2004, is a tunnel that would link existing roads to the road of the caravan site.

Ghadira is our largest and one of the most beautiful bays we have. Over the years it has entertained millions of visitors both local and foreigners. I've stayed at Mellieha for the past 18 summers and each new summer this place deteriorates than the previous one. It's about time we do something about it and stop the bikkering between ourselves for our own benefit!
We could turn this bay into a paradise for us and for our tourist industry. Here are some suggestions 1) Seriously remove present road (which is built on 30 to 40 feet of sand)
2) Enlarge the beach by simply pumping sand further to the sea (should'nt be that difficult since of the shallow feature which extends further out) 3) having more sand space one can accomodate sport spaces such as enclosed 7 aside football pitches, badminton mini courts, volleyball, install gym equipment for muscle showoffs etc - these could be hired for a fee if one feels like having some fun 4) Plant loads of palm trees and other adpatable shrubs so as not to keep losing precious sands from getting blown away 5) have a good carpark service built nearby.

the ghadira road needs to be reviewed. to leave it as it is is not an option, for many reasons:
it is too close to the beach- dangerous, pollution
it is hampering the beach- traffic jams, traffic build up
there is no adequate parking
it is a shambles and the road has disintegrated
the road is twisty and dangerous
the beach can be widened
we need to keep in mind that this is the MAIN ROAD TO CIRKEWWA, MARFA, ARMIER AND ALL OF GOZO.
i think that Austin Gatts option needs to be studied better and tweaked to be of minimal disturbance to environment.
but surely,,,,, the road as it is IS NOT AN OPTION!!
