Action against scrap yard welcomed
Two environment lobby groups, Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar and the Ramblers Association, have welcomed the planning authority's direct action to seal off the Ta' Gasparell scrap yard in Birżebbuġa.
FAA coordinator Astrid Vella said neighbours had to put up with decades of dirt, air polluted by grit and constant noise because of this scrap yard.
She said the action of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority offered residents hope that the full dismantling of the abusive scrap yard could finally be in sight.
She praised Mepa for not waiting for the conclusion of the appeal before taking action as the case had been dragging for 14 years.
During this time, she said, the scrap yard continued to grow and even benefitted from government contracts while encroaching on potentially rich archaeological ground near Borg in-Nadur and Għar Dalam.
Ramblers' secretary Alex Vella said similar measures were sorely needed to make the Maltese countryside more attractive to locals and foreigners.
"For far too long, scrap and other yards and quarries have been allowed to tarnish the Maltese countryside with impunity," he said.
There were other yards that needed to be cleared, he said, including the ones along the road leading to Birżebbuġa, along the Burmarrad-to-St Paul's Bay main road, at Mġarr near the parish church and at Ta' Qali near the Crafts Village.

@J. Cutajar. Who do I think I am to say that the scrap yard is on archaeological grounds? I was simply commenting on the story as it was printed and I quote, 'encroaching on potentially rich archaeological ground near Borg in-Nadir and Gear Dalai'. Did you actually read the story before jumping in? Perhaps you have proof that this is not the case.
From the Mepa map server and the aerial photos it is clear that the scrap yard is spilling closer and closer to the protected Ghar Dalam archaeological buffer zone. You talk about the company’s activity. The NGOs are not saying that your company should be shut down, on the contrary, that it should be moved to an industrial area where it would benefit from much better commercial conditions while relieving the residents and the surrounding countryside from the pollution that such an activity necessarily creates.

@ Stephen Spiteri: the scrapyard should have been sealed years ago, irrespective of outcomes of Appeals, because it's been operating, and receiving Government contracts, without any permit of any sort. It even lost its case in Court and was operating in defiance of a Court order to shut down. Is this a situation you would call civilized? That's what I call cowboy country.
I know it is fashionable in certain circles to accuse FAA of mob rule, but I think the boot is rather on the other foot.

Who do you think you are to say that the scrap yard is on archeological grounds? Do you have any proofs? For your information all the scrap metal recovered and collected from the countryside, companies etc is exported weekly. This is the only company in Malta that treat and export the majority of scrap metal.

@Stephen Spiteri. You obviously have a problem with FAA. Perhaps you run a scrap yard yourself and are worried that you might be next in the firing line. The rule of the mob as you refer to it is the voice of the people, something which thank God is starting to be heard. It's harder now for corrupt developers etc to get away with things like they did in the past, and the people to thank for that are the NGO's such as FAA and the good Maltese people who support them. You say that a case like this dragging on for 14 years is what makes you civilized. Really? You think it’s civilized to dump scrap on archaeological ground? You think its civilised to make those living around you suffer for years whilst you continue to thumb your nose at the law? You have a strange sense of civilisation! Keep up the good work FAA. You have the support of the vast majority of Maltese people.

And what if the appeal rules against MEPA ? Typical faa, praising the rule of the mob. Why not wait for the outcome of the appeal ? It dragged on for 14 years. So ? That is the law, and the procedure of the judiciary, but like it or not, that is what makes us civilized !

@B Agius. Please give FAA and the rest of the NGO's who are doing a great job a chance. If you go back just a couple of years FAA didn't even exist and these sorts of things were not being dealt with at all. You must remember that FAA are a relatively small group of volunteers who are doing their best to make the country a better place to live in for everyone. I for one think they are doing a sterling job and should be congratulated. If you are genuinely concerned at something you perceive to be harming the environment or the heritage of the country then please lift the phone and discuss the matter with FAA. I'm sure they will be more than willing to look into the matter for you.
