It has come to my knowledge that during the recent Malta-Hungary football match, a large banner bearing the words "Stop killing wild birds" was displayed behind Malta's goalposts.

Considering that Hungary happens to be a country where the killing of wild birds is a very popular practice, it is absurd, very unjust and defamatory that such a banner telling another country not to do likewise is displayed.

Considering that Hungary's only bird protection organisation, the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME), could be considered as the only possible culprit, it might interest The Times to know that this organisation is a partner of BirdLife international of which BirdLife Malta too is a partner. If being ridiculed in this manner is of no news value, it might also interest The Times to know that this banner was removed by the Hungarian authorities following complaints by the Malta contingent that such a banner had political implications.

It might interest readers to know about such shame being directed at our country by who is after bird protection at the expense of Malta's international image.
