Alternattiva Demokratika is proposing to increase the supply of solar water heaters because only eight per cent of households are equipped with this energy-saving technology.

Party chairman Arnold Cassola said the party had a number of concrete proposals to tackle the energy issue and Malta's complete dependence on fossil fuels.

Among others, AD is proposing to increase the efficiency of power generation plants from the present 32 per cent and replace one million incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving lamps by distributing lamps to families in exchange for normal filament lamps.

The government last year promised its own scheme to supply free energy-saving bulbs to each household, which is meant to be implemented soon.

On the subject of wind farms, Prof. Cassola said that, rather than experimenting with offshore facilities, the party was proposing land-based wind farms to gain experience with this technology.

The government is looking into setting up an offshore wind farm at Sikka l-Bajda, off Mellieħa, a proposal on which AD cast doubts earlier this week citing German experts who, it claimed, had questioned the viability of the project. This has been denied by the Resources Ministry.

AD also believes that a climate change pact with all social partners should be drawn up to map out the way forward and the duties and obligations of the different players in the country to tackle the energy crisis.

AD, which recently met Friends of the Earth to discuss issues related to the environment and climate change, said the Greens in the European Parliament were ever at the forefront in proposing the necessary measures to reduce pollution and reform Europe's energy infrastructure.

Prof. Cassola also spoke of AD's record in the environmental field and praised the work of environmental NGOs and volunteers who dedicated their time to work for the cause they believed in.

"We support all those who are working to stop the destruction of Wied il-Għasel in Mosta. We are very worried by the constant attack on our natural heritage, like the proposed road in Għadira, which seems to have been proposed to serve the interests of the few. Other attacks on our natural heritage are the proposed development at Ħondoq ir-Rummien and Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo," he said.
