The quick solution to overspeeding?

The speedometer of my small family car shows it capable of a maximum speed of 240 km/h. I imagine that a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, can achieve 400 km/h.

I find it incomprehensible that carmakers continue with the obsession for improved engine power, acceleration and speed when generally you are legally limited to 50/80 km/h on most roads in Europe.

What sense does it make if not for governments to rake in the billions of euros in car taxes and speeding fines? Manufacturers should be prohibited from producing potentially illegal machines and governments ought to ban the importation of such vehicles if, and this is the big if, the matters of safety and the environment are really and truly so dear to the lawmakers.
